Did You Know that You Have the Power to Define Yourself for Yourself?

At Made in Color, we're all about leveling up our mindset. As creatives, we face many challenges in our work and personal lives, especially in today's world. From the rise of AI and automation to the recent collapse of SVB Bank, it's easy to feel like the odds are stacked against us. But the truth is, cultivating self-confidence is essential for overcoming obstacles and thriving in our careers and lives.?

So how do we stay confident in a world that often invalidates our experiences and perpetuates negative stereotypes? First, it's essential to recognize that external factors do not determine your worth. The opportunities, the feedback, or the recognition you receive (or not) do not define you. Like Audre Lorde once said, "You have the power to define yourself for yourself" – and that's on, period.?

Here are our three tried and true ways to strengthen self-confidence: Visualize Yo Sh*t, Talk Yo Sh*t, Push Yo Sh*t.

  1. Imagine yourself living your best life. Be like Maya Angelou. Despite facing racism and trauma early in life, she envisioned herself as a great writer and speaker. As a result, she became one of the most celebrated poets and authors of all time. Likewise, we inspire our team to have dreams and goals beyond Made in Color. We frequently ask each other: "How can we support you in making your dreams a reality?"
  2. Express yourself unapologetically. Be like James Baldwin. Living as a queer Black man facing intersectional forms of homophobia and racism, he used his prolific perspective to challenge societal norms and advocate for justice and equality. As a result, he became one of American history's most significant social activists and authors. At MIC, we're establishing a transformative culture that invites everyone to speak their minds honestly. If something isn't working well, then let's talk about it.?
  3. Challenge your limitations. Be like Frida Kahlo. Despite suffering chronic pain and multiple surgeries, she continued to create art expressing her pain and passion. She became a cultural icon known for her strength and resilience. We oblige when someone on our team wants to try something new or different. It's liberating to encourage each other to unlock our full potential.?

Ultimately, cultivating your creative confidence is a journey, not a destination. It won't always be easy but know it's 100% worth it. So let's embrace challenges and opportunities to become the creative geniuses we're meant to be.?
