Did You Know This Is The Same Guy?
Having a life as a performer and songwriter in the music business is about as far as you can get from where I sit now as the President of a Talent Acquisition firm. So what's the significance of bringing this up now?
Every once and a while a client or candidate will approach me and ask me "are you a musician!!?". I'll have a little chuckle and say "yeah, but that was a long time ago."
Well, maybe not.
With the integration of digital music streaming into everyday life, I'm getting more and more people asking me "who are you... really?" My album Please Do Not Disturb and the 13 singles that were released in 2006 have bounced back to life in 2016. Doing literally nothing, Spotify, the world's biggest digital music streaming company has picked up the entire album and wildly enough, my music now appears on 14 different album compilations and seems to be gaining a ton of traction.
Once people find out that I had a music video, songs on the radio and some relatively decent success for a Canadian artist, they ask, "why did you stop"?
That's an easy one. I worked with people that were far more talented than me and who were still gigging for $100 a night. I also had a first row seat working closely with record labels seeing other artists who had little talent but were climbing the charts. I love to write and produce music, but I was never willing to give up everything for a 'chance' at making it.
I also worked in the corporate medical world before becoming a full time musician and my passion for business, building teams and simple logic brought me back to the beautiful place that I am today with my teams at MAGNUS.
What might have happened if I continued on in the music industry? That's a total crap shoot. However, I did work with some unbelievably talented people who have more than "made it". Nasri who co-wrote and sang back up on my first single Parent's House is the lead singer and song writer of today's super group MAGIC, recently debuting at #1 on the billboard top 100 with 'lay you down easy" featuring Sean Paul. For those who don't know Sean Paul, he's the rapper on Sia's new track "Cheap Thrills" and has a shiny Grammy on his mantel. Adam Messinger who produced my album and continues to write and produce for MAGIC has a few Grammy's of his own and has gone on to produce Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown and Pitbull to name a few.
The goal of any good songwriter is to create a song that is timeless. No matter what fad, craze or musical style that changes the sound of popular music, if you can write and perform a song the embraces the listener, takes them for a moment in time to a different place, helps them experience powerful emotions, or maybe even gives them goosebumps, then you've done your job.
I have the same philosophy that applies to why I wrote music, how I live today and the foundation for the company I'm building. I'm here to create something that will outlast me and uphold the very essence of what it was created for; to motivate, to inspire, to serve and to "Empower 'Your' People".
