Did you know that one third of dog owners are not able to determine whether their pet is overweight or even obese?

Purina has recently completed a study in collaboration with experts from five universities, who have assessed how owners’ beliefs and behaviours are often associated with dog obesity. The research – which has assessed over 3,000 dogs in France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United Kingdom - has revealed that part of the growing problem related to pet obesity is due to owners’ unawareness about what a healthy weight for their pets should be. One third of the surveyed owners, in fact, considered their dog’s weight as ideal, despite the pet being actually overweight or obese. Our study also suggests the importance of both educating owners on adequate weight management for their pets’ health and providing them with tools that can help with effectively preventing and reducing the prevalence of pet obesity.

As part of our commitment to reducing the risk of pet obesity, at Purina we are working with partners to develop new research as well as solutions that can help pet owners with tackling the problem. We firmly believe in the importance of prevention to reverse the trend, which is why we help owners with understanding and adopting healthy behaviours since the beginning of their pet ownership journey, while collaborating with veterinarians and other experts.
