Did You Know Loading Computers Are Mandatory for Almost All Ships ?

In the maritime industry, safety is of paramount importance. One way to ensure safe navigation is by using a loading computer. Did you know that loading computers are mandatory for almost all ships ?

According to UR-S1Rev7, a regulation governing ship stability, a loading computer is a mandatory tool for calculating ship stability during loading and unloading operations. The use of a loading computer aims to ensure that the ship remains stable and safe during the loading and unloading process.

Here are some key points from UR-S1Rev7 regarding loading computers :

  • Mandatory: "Every ship loading or unloading cargo with a total weight of more than 5 metric tons must be equipped with a loading computer that meets IMO standards" (Article 1.2).
  • Function: "The loading computer must be able to calculate and display ship stability during the loading and unloading process" (Article 2.1).
  • Accuracy: "The results of the loading computer calculations must be accurate and in accordance with the actual conditions of the ship" (Article 2.2).
  • Documentation: "The results of the loading computer calculations must be documented and kept as ship data" (Article 3.1).

UR-S1Rev7 applies to ships built on or after July 1, 1998. Additionally, IMO Res. A.744(18) applies to existing ships, which are ships built before 1 July 1998.

For ships with a length of more than 65 meters, there are additional regulations regarding loading computers:

  • IMO Res. A.267(8): This regulation requires that ships with a length of more than 65 meters must be equipped with a loading computer that can calculate the ship's stability in various loading and unloading conditions.
  • IMO MSC.Circ.982(Rev.3): This circular provides guidance on the use of loading computers for ships with a length of more than 65 meters.

These additional regulations ensure that larger ships, which are more susceptible to stability issues, are equipped with the necessary tools to maintain stability during loading and unloading operations.

Loading computers work by calculating the distribution of cargo within the ship. This calculation considers various factors, such as cargo type, cargo weight, and cargo position within the ship. The results of the loading computer calculations are then used to determine whether the ship is still stable and safe for navigation.

Who Manufactures Loading Computers?

There are several loading computer manufactures in the world, one of which is iStow. iStow is a loading computer that provides various ship stability solutions, including loading computers and stowage plans software. iStow loading computer have been used by many shipping companies around the world and have proven to help improve efficiency and safety.

What are the Benefits of Using Loading Computers?

In addition to ensuring navigation safety, using a loading computer also offers several other benefits, such as :

  • Reducing the risk of ship accidents
  • Speeding up the loading and unloading process
  • Saving ship operating costs

If you want to ensure the safety of your ship, use a loading computer. Loading computers are essential tools that can help you keep your ship's crew and cargo safe.
