Did you know landlines are disappearing by 2025?

Are you ready to lose your landline?

Openreach, the owner of all the copper lines in the ground are switching off their network!

These are the cables that we use to make our everyday calls on to our loved ones, shops, doctors, restaurants, and everyone else we call. ?Very soon we will all need a data connection routed into our houses and a VoIP service (Digital landline).

How will this affect you?

Did Openreach think about the affect this will have on everyone, especially to pensioners who rely on panic buttons and landlines to make calls?

Pensioners have been warned by Ofcom, as their emergency alarms will no longer function due to the reliance on the copper network.

The regulator has stated that BT’s digital phone roll out will affect over 500,000 vulnerable people across the UK, who have safety devices on them or in their house that are now deemed useless.?

Millions of unknowing Brits will be forced to go online for the first time. This means having to rely on a mobile phone or a cloud based telephone line, stripping the UK of their beloved landline.

Any devices linked to landlines will need to be replaced or reconfigured due to everything being scrapped.

Will these digital landline phones truly be better?

As a company whose brand is telecoms, we understand the digitising of things like communications and mobiles. We have always stood behind and used Openreach’s telecoms network. The reason for the removal is down to the cost of maintaining this network. Doing this is a lot more cost effective than the keeping these copper wires in the ground, which means the new glass fibre that will be going in, is a lot less expensive for them to maintain and install.

Openreach is the largest wired telecommunications company in the UK and hold the largest amount of copper wires which is why this is taking over 3 years to complete.

Are they making the right choice?

Caroline Abrahams of Age UK said: “Public communications about the switchover have been poor to date and urgently need attention. Older people need to know from their telecom’s provider, Ofcom and the Government what will happen when, and what their options are,”.

You could face having fork out for an alarm that needs a router with an FX connection to a telephone. The issue with this is in the case of a power cut, the router will power down and you won’t be able to call anyone. This could cause added panic in the event of an emergency for an elderly person who is home alone. With the current exchange you have a backup battery, this would enable a plug in the wall phone to still make a call, in case of any power outage.

So, by 2025, every business and home in the country, that wants to maintain a phone line will also need to be connected to a reliable internet source.

This change wont only affect your landline, this means any other systems using BT’s telephone network will also need to be changed. Alarm systems, payment terminals and, of course, Britain’s proudest heritage… the iconic red telephone boxes will all need to be brought online! This is Openreach’s way of saving money. However, if you are on a LLU (Local loop unbundled service) you will not be affected with the burden of having to change. According to TalkTalk they carry their calls differently to BT Openreach. If you call us at POP telecom we may be able to switch you to this service now and add this broadband to your home.

We have not been informed on how providers will start to notify their loyal customers of the upcoming switchover. How long till other telecoms companies are talking about the largest change of telecommunications since 1973, when the mobile phone was first created.

Many people who have already heard about this have had loads of questions like;

·??????How will the UK cope with being a nation that is online?

·??????Will this new change effect your life?

·??????What will our pensioners do without having a landline or emergency button?

·??????What do we do with our old landlines?

We have had many changes as the world has grown. Some for the better and some not so much. ?

If you want to find out how you can get ahead of the curve call us on 03435386611 or, follow the link below to the website and have a chat with us online. What will happen and is slowly happening already is that the exchanges will become ‘stop sell’ which means we are unable to provide, install or take over existing copper services and instead will only be able to offer glass fibre services.

So be quick!

We are happy to answer any questions you may have to the best of our abilities.
