Did You Go From Experiencing Racism In Academia To Racism In The Workplace? | Black Women & Toxic Jobs

Welcome to the newest edition of my weekly newsletter for Black Women Toxic Job Survivors! Please subscribe to be notified about future postings.

If you are anything like me, you went from experiencing racism in academic settings from such an early age (in my case, it started in elementary school) to experiencing racism in toxic workplaces as an adult.

The truth is that for so many of us, there is no reprieve from the constant questioning of our intelligence, our competence, and our inherent worth as human beings in these institutions. As children and young adults, we experience gaslighting in academic spaces that greatly harms us and unfortunately primes us for the psychological abuse that occurs later on in toxic jobs.

Yesterday, on my weekly live on my YouTube channel, which takes place every Sunday at 8pm ET/5pm PT, I facilitated an incredible panel discussion with Alecia Renece The Artist, Indya Powell, MBA, and Marissa Price, MSW (who is also my virtual assistant) about surviving and healing from racism in academia.

My wonderful panelists bravely shared their experiences navigating these often treacherous academic spaces. Here are a just a few quotes:

"I went into my graduate program with impostor syndrome...I had to really had to be conscious of the way that I view myself - me trying to conform to a mold that wasn't me, me being more quiet, not speaking up the way I wanted to, more conscious of if I'm being soft-spoken enough, the way I dress. Just policing myself and all the ways that were making me inauthentic. I had to really look within myself to say 'how I am showing up?' I'm not agreeable, I'm not shy, I am an introvert, but I have ideas. I have so many things to share." - Indya Powell, MBA
"When I went to college, I kind of had like a culture shock...I never really had to be looked at through the white gaze until I got to college. I think it was there, that I was like oh, this is what it really means to be a Black body within a white space, this is what it means to be a Black woman body in a white space...there are certain things that I experienced in college that I did not experience in high school, as in being the example for ALL Black folks. There was a lot of pressure because I was like, Black folks are not a monolith." - Alecia Renece The Artist
