Are you tired of saying "References upon request" or carrying copies of reference letters with you to interviews? Those same people that care enough about you to write those letters can also write you a recommendation in LinkedIn. I know Mind Blown!
The section marked "Recommendations" is just for those people to send you a letter of reference or recommendation. Point blank my friends, it is that simple. What a wonderful idea. No longer are the days of you needing to say those words, and then you scrambling to find the letters or worse calling, emailing or text friends or coworkers to write those letters on your behalf.
There are two ways to get these recommendations. The most straight forward way is to reach out to one of those people you would traditionally get one from and ask them for it. The other way, is a little more covert. Write a letter of recommendation for someone on their LinkedIn profile, and appeal to their need to return the favor.
Does it always work, no, however, if you chose this route ensure you do it with the expectation that it may not work and that you are only writing letters of recommendation for those that you feel truly deserve them. Otherwise, you are watering down your brand and the worth of your recommendations, think of it as a limited edition series, if there are a million of them out there, it isn't worth anything, if there are only 10 or so, and the ones you gave them to are all Rockstar's in their field, then your letters of recommendation carry weight, just as those that gave them to you would have the same effect.

If you hate having to always carry around additional letters, or having to scramble around to get more then, this is a route worth pursuing. As Recruiters pull your profile in their recruiting efforts and see that others took the time to write letters of endorsement, it says a lot about who you are and what you meant to prior organizations. So don't forget about the recommendation letters.
