Did someone ever tell you that you are an Egoist? A small story on how I gave-up on my Ego

When people start calling you a successful Entrepreneur, it goes in your head and you start believing that you can change everything in this world. This happened to me, has it happened to you as well? I believed a lot in my ability to make anything happen, I became so arrogant that I believed I could grant life to someone on the deathbed. Here's a true story from my book *An Entrepreneur with the fire within* available on Amazon and Flipkart.
One evening I was watching a documentary on National Geographic about the tough survival of lions in Africa which had me hooked. It showed the fight between a Pride of lions and a herd of buffaloes in which a cub injures his spinal cord. Unable to support himself on all fours, he drags his body around. Despite the support from Pride, he shows no improvement. While the senior lions and lionesses give up on him, the younger ones try their best to make him walk.?
As the ways of the jungle go- when the prey leaves a habitat, the predators follow. The wilder beasts and zebras had left the place, and the lions decided to move. With the last of the prey left, soon, there will be nothing for them to feed on. The Pride had no way out but to leave the cub, “Junior,” as he was addressed in the documentary.
I was moved to tears at the sight of the helplessness of both, The Pride as well as Junior. Still, their brutality hurt me to the core, and I prayed to God to give me a chance to save someone like Junior. I wanted to show the world how the life of an animal could be saved. I also posted an aggressive comment on the Nat Geo website below the video and criticized their team for abandoning Junior and letting him die. If I had been there in their place, I was definitely going to bring him with me and save his life.
?
The super scientist of this Universe came up with an opportunity for me within a few days. Eight puppies were born in front of the ESDS office premises in Nashik. One of them was the ‘Leader,’ who guided the rest and he literally looked like a Lion cub with the only difference as in his face. One day, in the absence of the mother who had gone to fetch food for them, he was hit by a motorbike and lost the ability to walk. The security guards picked him up and brought him to me. I named him Junior; he was every inch a lion, in looks as well as in attitude.

The doctors told me that once an animal becomes a downer, like Junior, we need to infuse strength into his lower limbs. We came up with a lot of innovative ideas; one of them was making a wheeled cart on which he could support his body. But somehow, all our ideas were rejected by Junior; he loved to drag himself around.
One fateful day, the security cabin glass where Junior was sitting broke all of a sudden, and he dragged his body over the broken pieces of Glass, cutting his legs severely. We bandaged and chained him, but he wasn’t used to it and rebelled. He went to wet areas, which infected his wounds further, causing maggots to infest him. He bled and smelled horrible. The doctor was summoned who cleaned and treated him, but he also told us the bitter truth,
“You’re only making him suffer by saving his life. He needs to be put to sleep with an injection.”
I was beside myself with misery. He was such a lion-hearted dog despite being a downer, fierce and loud. I remembered how one day the Commissioner had visited our office accompanied by commandos. Junior was hiding on the lawn, and he barked at them so ferociously that they had to run to save their lives. Big dogs on our office street were afraid of coming close to Junior though he could not stand on his 4 feet. He was truly a Lion born as a Dog.
I rejected the Doctor's suggestion and Junior kept on moving around the entire office and his Blood spilled all over the campus. ESDSians did not complain as the Dog was the Boss's Child. Once again the Doctor was called to the office and he repeated the same words.
Junior took his last breath in my arms as he was injected and put to sleep. I realized that God gave me the opportunity I had asked for, but it wasn’t in my hands to give life. I made life even more miserable for Junior and also for myself. That was the day I realized that I could not become bigger than mother nature. She took away my ego from me, but I felt lighter inside me when I decided to surrender to mother nature.

1 年Piyush Somani being a dog lover I can understand what would have went through. Was it ego or love is that confuses me. It was ego fueled by love and a very good heart I guess. In the whole incident and sequence it was all love .. also the doctors loved their job too ?? and hence gave the practical opinion. Agree on the fact that ego of being above nature and rest of the humanity leads to distancing of the individual form self and people around. Great read Piyush Somani . Thanks for posting such life lessons
