Did iPhone 6s announcements break your test automation scripts?

I was just watching the big announcements Apple made today, and while the excitement of the new features was there, what was more overwhelming was, how these new features are going to affect the test automation tools, and the test automation scripts that currently exist in the market.

Some of the new features that interested me from the event:

  • Apple Pencil
  • Apple iPad Pro with a large screen resolution (with Pencil support) and split screen support
  • iOS9 for iPhone 6s with 3D touch support and gestures like Peek and Pop

As apps start supporting the new features, the automation scripts built on previous versions of Apple devices will have to start getting updated, but also, the it will be interesting to see how the Test Automation tools support the gestures such as 3D touch and simulate Apple Pencil.

With Apple venturing into new interface devices and gestures, others will surely follow and it should be expected that a lot will change with the other mobile OSes.

Mobile technology changing so often is really a challenge, especially to keep the test automation scripts up to date with technology changes and upgrades(and sometimes language changes).

What have been your experience with these kind of challenges with Mobile OSes updating features every year, and new interface devices coming in to play? Does test automation make financial sense for you in such a scenario?

As always, I would love to hear your views.

Happy learning!

with respect to the changes that you have mentioned on features I would say hardly 10℅ of regression scripts effort would be needed..and that shouldn't be that big...keeping in mind the factors like Time to Market and Return on Investment

Very informative post Vishnu. Yes. scripts do need to change when the product or technology is changed/updated. How about automating script development? Saves a lot of time, doesn't it? Following up on this, I came across and registered for a webinar on "Automation for Test Automation" It would impart the process in developing an automation suite having a self-maintaining automation mechanism and which would work for any customization and configuration.
