Did the Defense Spending Bill Go Far Enough for Cybersecurity?
Hello, and welcome to our latest edition of Data Security Digest where we bring you new and noteworthy insights into any and all things related to securing your organization’s data!?
In this edition, we’re diving into our newly signed partnership agreement with Aon , how Rubrik is reinventing cybersecurity with its supercloud vision, and four ways the new defense spending bill could have addressed AI.
Aon Becomes Rubrik Partner As “Backups Alone Are Not Enough”
One of the biggest weaknesses of perimeter-based security is that it’s static, whereas users, devices, and apps can now be found by the score outside traditional network boundaries. Not surprisingly, a global survey in 2022 found that 80% of enterprises either have adopted a zero trust security strategy or have plans to adopt one in the future.
In addition to this, the State of Data Security report from Rubrik Zero Labs unveiled that 96% of IT and Security leaders are concerned they will be unable to maintain business continuity if they experience a cyberattack in 2023. And from the top, 39% of Boards and C-suites have little to no confidence in their organizations' ability to recover critical data.
Professional services and management consulting firm Aon acknowledged this as it signed on to collaborate with Rubrik to advance our mission to secure the world’s data. The collaboration aims to empower joint customers to make better business decisions and achieve cyber readiness — and ultimately, cyber resilience.
Aon Cyber Solutions’ head of strategic alliances Christopher Bruno said that “while we’ve come a long way in the art of the backup, many organizations have an opportunity to improve recovery, highlighting the importance of speed, confidence, and minimal impact.”
Reinventing Cybersecurity with Supercloud and AI
Rubrik Co-Founder, Chair, and CEO Bipul Sinha?knows there’s no single silver preventative bullet for cybersecurity. Because of this, Rubrik is constantly looking ahead and coming up with innovative ways to boost the cyber resilience of organizations around the world.
He shared a vision to align the concept of the supercloud with AI in the service of more robust cybersecurity for organizations of all types and sizes. What is supercloud? It’s a relatively recent term for a cloud-based architecture that combines edge computing, multi-cloud, and multi-location compute. The supercloud is thought to be ideal for modern enterprises due to the flexibility, low-latency, and versatility it offers as combining the best of all cloud worlds.
Rubrik houses a single policy engine the Rubrik Security Cloud, which is formed by merging cybersecurity, data protection, and backup and recovery concepts, creating one single platform to secure data wherever it lives across SaaS, Enterprise,?or Cloud. In this way, Rubrik delivers supercloud data security.?
But that’s not all. Rubrik also brings AI into the mix. AI offers opportunities to shorten the time needed to identify and respond to cybersecurity incidents. By automating everything from hunting for threats to analyzing malware to stopping phishing attacks, AI offers to lighten burdens on security teams everywhere.

Sinha talked about the ways these moves will enable Rubrik to revamp the cybersecurity sector with SiliconANGLE & theCUBE ’s industry analyst?Dave Vellante during a broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s live streaming studio.
4 Holes in the Defense Spending Bill, says Rubrik’s CISO
Michael Mestrovich , Chief Information Security Officer at Rubrik and former CISO at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) penned a commentary for Federal Tech Today about the National Defense Authorization Act?for fiscal 2024 passed by the U.S. Senate in late July.?
Although the bill does address important cybersecurity issues, it has also missed some significant opportunities, Mestrovich wrote – specifically four of them that would have expanded collaboration and tackled some emerging technology challenges.
“I wish the bill packed a bigger wallop on cybersecurity." – Michael Mestrovich, CISO at Rubrik?
The four initiatives Mestrovich wishes had been in the bill are:
Mestrovich is still hoping there’s a chance to remedy these omissions. As the legislation weaves through the House and – most likely -- a conference committee, “perhaps these and other ideas can still find their way into the package,” he concluded.
