The DICT is the primary government entity spearheading the advancement of the national ICT development agenda.
Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Acting Secretary Emmanuel Rey “Manny” R. Caintic officiated a public consultation with Satellite Systems Providers or Operators (SSPOs) on May 26, 2022, at the Manila Polo Club in Makati. Secretary Caintic urged the SSPOs to intensify their corporate presence in the country and be part of the digital transformation being pushed forward by the Department.
“We will foster an enabling environment for our SSPOs and support them with policies that will safeguard them so they can help in accelerating our digital transformation initiatives,” Sec. Caintic said. The Department’s streamlining initiatives are prescribed and guided by DICT Department Circular No. 001, s. 2022 that rationalizes, streamlines and liberalizes the registration, regulation, and monitoring of qualified SSPOs which will quicken the pace of their participation. DICT Director Elias Omar A. Sana added that the DICT will utilize an online submission platform where applicants can conveniently submit their requirements.
Meanwhile, DICT Undersecretary Alan A. Silor underscored the importance of satellite connectivity in the country. “Even if we have good ICT infrastructures, they are vulnerable to natural disasters. This is when the advantages of satellite connectivity are especially realized. Getting bandwidth from satellite providers is also the way to go for Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged areas or GIDA sites where laying fiber cables is difficult,” he said.
“We are in the right direction. Let us continue what we have started and let us work towards our common goal of providing faster and secure connectivity for everyone,” Sec. Caintic said in closing.
DICT Undersecretary Maria Victoria C. Castro, DICT Director Maria Teresa Magno-Garcia, DICT consultant Atty. Ira Paulo Pozon as well as industry players from BOI Investments, FICTAP, Globe Telecom, Kacific, PCTA, PCTO, SES, Smart Communications, SpaceX, and USAID were present during the event.
