Diary of a volunteer
Day 3
We went to Gawair after the Juma Prayer today and met significantly more people due to the weekend.
Regardless of the weekend, I found the boy Sumon working at the dumpster.
Sujon (Sumon’s older brother) is a grade 10 student. He joined MCF in 2005. Their father passed away in young age due to a heart attack in 2012. Since then, the family has been struggling. Sumon is forced to work because the family is unable to support themselves. The mother has to do menial jobs.Their sacrifices gives the family income to survive and the oldest brother has a chance to continue his education. Apart from that, the grandmother (80 years old Saleha) needs frequent medical visits. A large number of bills are unpaid and due.
Now, you want to know how much it would take to get Sumon out of there ??
+/- 400 AED per month would do the magic. No more squashing cans in the dumpster.
House Rent: BDT 3,000 However the house (room) is too small for 6 people to live in (take a closer look at the pictures). Approximate Food Support: BDT 5,000.
Oh,I think should mention how it was at the dumpster for me. It was the most disgusting place I have ever been. I wish you could just smell it while you read this post ! I had to pull myself together not to….. By Manuela Emmer
Maria Cristina Foundation 10 years of creating and shaping the future of a forgotten community in Bangladesh. For 8 years MCF supported full time 600 children with all their day to day needs with the goal of keeping them in education. Unfortunately in recent years after the global financial crisis we have struggled to maintain the same levels of support. Every year due lack funding we have to downsize,Sumon is just one example of somebody whose family hit really bad times and he was the only option for an income to support the family.
There are many other very sad cases.
Only YOU and ME can help them, there are no other opportunities for these families to escape poverty.
