The Diary of an SEO - Ep. 1. What is a topical landing page for SEO?

Hi, it's Peter here with the diary of an SEO, and this is episode one. In this episode, we're going to climb into have a look at a topical specific web page that we built for a client, and recently re optimized and updated a little bit. Now we'll have a look at how that's performed, and what we can do to improve its performance further, and what we did to get it to perform the way that it has so far. So let's go and look at the screen now. And we'll run through this case study.

Okay, so here's the page in question.

So this is a specific landing page for the range of terms relating to retractable fly screens for bifold doors. And as you can see, here, we've just got some some copy, we've got an h1 tag here, which is pretty much the same as the title tag for this page, we've got an h2 here, with a bit of a benefit, so "enjoy indoor outdoor living", then we have another benefit focused age to transform your bifold doors, etc, etc, then we've got a range of features and benefits with images. And a little section here where we talk about selecting the right flyscreens for bifold doors and so on. So it's pretty well as simple as that.

So let's have a look at how this is actually ranking now. We've made some improvements and changes to it recently. So for retractable fly screens for bifold doors, and there's our sponsored ad. And there is the number one ranking and there is our ranking. So we're ranking number 2 organically for that term. Now this website here freedom screens is a big national website. So it has much more authority than our site. So I'm pretty happy with that number 2 ranking.

Now the other important thing to recognize is that this term, this page will rank for other other terms as well. So if we go screens for bifold doors, let's have a look at that. There's the sponsored ad coming up nicely. Number one, retractable freedom screens again, ah, number two, so that's good Intelliscreens is ranking number 2. Now this is particularly good, because this search term has 390 searches a month.

So I thought I would just show you how I know that and how you might be able to see in the video, that there's these little numbers underneath the search term here. And that's because I'm using a plugin called Keywords Everywhere. So this is a Chrome add on well worth getting. The pricing is extremely reasonable like it's, here we go $1.75 a month. So it's just crazy cheap. And what this does is it tells you the keyword search volume for any search term that you type in, based on the country you're in. So I'm in Australia, so I've already obviously set it for Australia.

Now as well as that it does provide information here about the SEO difficulty. I don't find this particularly useful or accurate. But also it provides a range of other related keywords and so on. So retractable flyscreens Bunnings. Obviously, we don't want anything Bunnings in it, and security screens for bifold doors. What have we got here retractable screens, Brisbane, and so on, and so on. So there's all sorts of other different terms.

We could put retractable screens for bifold doors like that. And they'll be ranking number two for that. I think another one is bifold door screens will probably rank number 3 for that. I'd say. Have a quick look. Yeah, so we're ranking mostly to but between two and three for these genre of terms just with that one page. So that's great. I'm pretty happy with that.

So let's have a quick look at what we did with this. For this we're going to go to neuron writer and bring up the project for this domain in here. And what I've done is I've put this content query into neuron writer, retractable flyscreens for bifold doors. And it brings up here the top 10 results. And so we can see that. So here you can see all the different competitors.

And you can see we are ranked here number two, and our score on site content score is actually the highest in the top 10. In fact, it's the highest in the top 30. So the number one result is 69, and we have 8 points extra at 77. You might wonder why that is. And the simple reason is that Freedom Screens has more authority than our website.

However, this, this shows you all sorts of other information like the content length, the word count, readability score, and so on. So, overall, with our overall score of score of 77, I'm very, very happy with that. So that's basically what neuron writer does. And if we copied the content of that page into here into this editor, what it would do is bring up the current score of that. And then we can tweak it by adding various of these suggested terms and words here into the body and also into the headings of that particular article. So that's what neuron writer does. All right, so as you can see, this has been quite effective in getting this page ranking well for us, it's doing good duty against a number of keywords, some of them with up around 3, 4, or 5 hundred searches a month. So just with this one simple page, it is performing extremely well.
