Diary of a non tech tech recruiter- Develop what?
When I was a kid, developing meant putting your film in at Boots and waiting a week to find 26 photos of your own finger, or worse, that you’d left the shutter on and not taken a single photo of your teen holiday to Tenerife. These days it means something a lot more sophisticated, and I’ve been on a proper journey finding out all about it. A much more fruitful one that that Tenerife disaster!
So, what the heck is a developer? In essence it is someone that writes computer software programmes...They could also be called a coder, programmer or software developer. That sounds easy right? Well get ready to dive down the rabbit hole because there is a lot more to it than that. Just like in real life, there are many different languages that code can be written in, so when looking for a developer you might be searching for someone with one or more speciality languages. There are 4 major languages Java, Python, C++ and Scala, and many more that might be used for specific needs.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention something about back-end and front-end developers, and no, I’m not referring to a pantomime horse (although if anyone is recruiting for one, I’m sure I’d be able to help!). This is referring to web developers and divides skills between the nuts and bolts, behind the scenes developing - back end, and the more visual ‘customer facing’ side - front end. This then makes a full stack developer a person that can handle everything. The full pantomime horse if you will (no offence!).
If this is still confusing, don’t worry, sometimes it gets me too, call me to discuss how we can help you navigate your tech recruitment process.
