Diaphragm Wall Desander Unit

The Diaphragm Wall Desander Unit is a crucial piece of equipment, especially in areas with complex geological conditions and high groundwater levels, where its role becomes indispensable. This article will provide a detailed introduction to the desander unit in diaphragm wall construction and its working principle.

The diaphragm wall desander unit is a device or system designed to remove sand, gravel, rubble, and other impurities generated during excavation. Its primary objective is to ensure that the excavated trench remains clean and free of impurities, thereby providing optimal conditions for subsequent reinforcement cage lowering and concrete pouring. Failure to promptly remove impurities such as sand and gravel can compromise concrete quality and potentially lead to issues like seepage, cracks, and other defects in the wall, significantly impacting the overall performance of the diaphragm wall.

Working Principle of the Diaphragm Wall Desander Unit:

1.Preliminary Separation:

During diaphragm wall construction, trenching machinery (e.g., grab or rotary trenchers) is employed to excavate a narrow and deep trench along the perimeter axis of the excavation project. During this process, most sand, gravel, and rubble impurities are excavated along with the soil. Preliminary screening and separation by the excavator help remove some of the larger impurities.

2.Mud Support and Suspension:

To maintain the stability of the trench walls, mud is typically used for support. The mud forms a protective layer that prevents trench wall collapse. Additionally, the mud suspends fine impurities like sand and gravel within it, facilitating subsequent treatment.

3.Diaphragm wall desander unit treatment:

The mud-impurity mixture, after mud support, enters the desander unit. The desanding equipment, often employing hydrocyclones, vibrating screens, or centrifuges, physically separates sand, gravel, and other impurities from the mud. These devices leverage centrifugal force, vibration, or swirling motion to settle or sieve out heavier impurities like sand and gravel, while the cleaned mud exits through the top of the unit, achieving separation.

4.Sand Processing & Disposal:

The separated sand and gravel undergo further treatment, including washing, dewatering, and drying, to remove organic matter and free water. Processed sand and gravel can be reused as construction materials or disposed of in landfills. The wastewater generated during treatment is purified to meet discharge standards before being released.

The significance of the Desander Unit in diaphragm wall construction cannot be overstated. It ensures a clean trench, laying a solid foundation for reinforcement cage placement and concrete pouring. It also effectively prevents seepage, cracks, and other issues, enhancing the diaphragm wall's overall performance and longevity. Moreover, the desander unit facilitates the recycling of sand and gravel resources and the clean discharge of wastewater, contributing to energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection.
