Diamonds Found in Sewers
Our reputation is built largely upon what people don't know. Our looks are based largely on covering up what we really look like; but if our story is to be effective, it must stand naked in front of the world.
Emotional Nudity
Did you know the most powerful element of your existence is located in what no one knows about you? Did you know the connection point that will adhere your heart to the heart of the marketplace is not found in your wins, but in your losses?
We humans are a strange bunch. We say what people want to hear so they can think what isn't true, planting an opinion about who we are in the minds of strangers who could care less. If you want to make an impact as a thought leader, product producer, or service provider, go where few have the courage to go. Go into the sewer.
The Sacred Sewer
The sewer is the dark, scary place where we hide those experiences we don't want the world to see—those disappointments, frustrations, failings, addictions, and more. They all live in the sewer. But there is a twist. When you open yourself to discuss the dark places, make sure you take a light. The market doesn't want to watch you cry, but it loves people who, with a positive attitude, speak about their struggles in order to help others. That is the diamond.

The Diamonds
Sewer Diamonds provide us with a different perspective, allowing us to process painful events differently. In that way, we begin to smile through our tears. We learn valuable lessons from what we once thought was useless heartache. Talk about how counseling redeemed your spirit that was broken from abuse. Talk about the lessons learned from bankruptcy that allowed you to build a successful company.
Give hope. Reach into the sewer. You'll be surprised how many roses you will find.

7 个月I had the same perspective as I recounted something someone said during my time of utter devastation. I told them what I was feeling, what I would've wanted or needed to hear, ans how that affirmative spoken word would have " quickened (churchy-word/ context) my spirit. We must not only speak to the problem ( or rather our perception of such), but BE or speak to the solution and in the midst, be kindhearted & gentle because we are all fragile gems. Good Word, Sir...as usual????????????????
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article! It resonated with me, especially when I think about the world of stand-up comedy. As comedians, our reputation often hinges on what the audience doesn’t see—the insecurities, the struggles, and the countless hours spent refining our craft. But the real magic happens when we dare to show that raw, unfiltered side of ourselves on stage. Dennis' “sewer” is the place where our true, often hidden stories live, stand-up comedy thrives when we dig into that space and bring out the diamonds. The jokes that land hardest and resonate most deeply often come from those painful or uncomfortable places. They’re not just funny—they’re real, they’re relatable, and they connect with the audience on a human level. In the end, both in business and in comedy, it’s about being authentic and sharing the truth of our experiences. That’s where the power lies.
