Life is like a chaotic dance, with its intricate steps and unexpected turns. For me, this dance took an unexpected twist when I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the tender age of 10. Little did I know that this diagnosis would set the stage for a lifelong performance filled with challenges, triumphs, and a touch of humour. Today, as a 38-year-old woman, I find myself facing a unique balancing act: managing diabetes full-time while fulfilling the roles of a dedicated employee, a loving mother, a dutiful daughter, and a homemaker. Join me on this journey as we explore the emotional rollercoaster and occasionally comedic moments that arise when navigating life's dancefloor with diabetes in tow.
The Unrelenting Tango of Diabetes:
Diabetes is no wallflower; it's a persistent dance partner who never leaves your side. Its unyielding presence demands constant attention, like a partner who steps on your toes but also helps you stay on beat. The daily rituals of monitoring blood sugar levels, injecting insulin, and counting carbohydrates become ingrained in your very existence. Yet, amidst the incessant rhythm of diabetes management, life's other dances beckon, eager to be joined.
The Mambo of Motherhood:
Being a mother is like doing the mambo—a vibrant, spirited dance that requires precision and grace. While the joy of motherhood is immeasurable, managing diabetes alongside the chaos of childcare can be a challenging performance. Balancing playdates, school activities, and endless responsibilities while ensuring my blood sugar levels stay steady is no easy feat. Yet, watching my child grow, learn, and embrace life's rhythm makes every extra twirl and twist worth it.
The Waltz of Work:
The waltz of work brings its own set of complexities to this dance floor. Diabetes becomes a discreet partner, subtly reminding me to check my glucose levels during meetings and slyly hiding my insulin injections from prying eyes. The dance of maintaining professionalism while managing this invisible companion is a delicate art. But let me tell you a secret: the skills I've developed through diabetes management have made me an expert in multitasking and resilience, giving me an edge in the corporate ballroom.

The Cha-Cha of Caregiving:
As a daughter, I'm engaged in a rhythmic cha-cha—a dance of love, compassion, and support. Caring for ageing parents adds a layer of complexity to my life, demanding attention to their health needs while not neglecting my own. Diabetes becomes a reminder that self-care must be prioritized, even amidst the flurry of responsibilities. The cha-cha teaches me to find a balance between caregiving and personal well-being, ensuring that I can continue this dance for years to come.
The Salsa of Self-Love:
Amidst the various dances that make up my life, I have learned that self-love is the foundation for harmony. Diabetes, obesity, hypothyroidism, and PCOD may be challenging partners, but they have also taught me to find humour in the most unexpected places. Embracing a side of punch and a witty perspective helps me navigate the twists and turns with grace and resilience. When life throws me a curveball, I counter with a sassy salsa step and a genuine smile.
Life's dancefloor is often a mélange of intricate steps, unexpected spins, and occasional missteps. For those of us living with diabetes, the dance becomes more demanding, yet also more meaningful. Balancing the demands of work, motherhood, caregiving, and self-care while managing diabetes full-time is no small feat. However, through it all, I've discovered the power of resilience, adaptability, and a sprinkle of humour. As I continue this dance of life, I invite you to join me in embracing the challenges, celebrating the triumphs, and always finding joy in the rhythm of it all.
So, let's lace up our dancing shoes, adjust our insulin pumps, and show the world that managing diabetes doesn't mean we can't dance with passion, purpose, and a touch of wit.
