Diabetes; 'the nation's silent killer'?

Diabetes; 'the nation's silent killer'

Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic illness in Australia with one Australian diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every 5 minutes (Diabetes Australia), costing the country $6billion per year! Globally 422 million people have diabetes and it’s estimated to kill a staggering 1.6 million people each year making it the 7th biggest global killer (World Health Organisation).

Diabetes is a chronic illness characterized by high levels of glucose in the blood. Blood sugar levels are controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. When the Pancreas is unable to deliver enough insulin or the body becomes resistant to insulin, the symptom of diabetes will occur.

Symptoms include frequent urination, excessive thirst, fatigue, blurred vision, irritability, slow wound healing, and nausea. The symptoms can be exacerbated by being excessively overweight and/or inactive.

There are many things people can do to reduce their risk of developing diabetes, these include taking regular exercise, healthy eating, reducing fats and sugars, and weight loss. Generally, all it takes is making some simple lifestyle changes. However, what is simple for one seems a mountain to climb for others and this is where mental wealth coaching and resilience keep things simple. After just a few sessions people change the way they think, feel and behave around food and exercise and make changes that are sustainable for the long term.??
