Puppies, senior dogs, adolescent dogs – they all need food, training, socialization, good health, and cuddles. Plus, stuff like toys, beds, harnesses, doggie tech and insurance... It’s enough to make a dog want to go for a walk! And the human is overwhelmed with choices.??

Don’t worry, all you need to know is in your weekly newsletter All About Dogs. This week we talk about diabetes in dogs. ?

?

Your dog’s health needs to be a priority in caring for him. Without good health, a dog can’t reach his full potential and enjoy his life. Diabetes can have a huge impact on a dog’s life. For the owner, it’s important to know what causes diabetes, what the symptoms are, how you can help to prevent it, and how diabetes can be treated. ?

?

What causes diabetes in dogs??

There are two main types of Diabetes in dogs:?

  • Diabetes 1 is the most common form and means the pancreas doesn’t produce sufficient insulin. This can be because of damage from autoimmune attacks on the pancreas or chronic pancreatitis.?

Genetics are a big cause of diabetes. Breeds like miniature poodles, Daschunds, Australian Terriers, Samoyeds, and Beagles are inclined to develop the disease. Hormonal influences can also lead to insulin resistance and contribute to diabetes.?

  • Type 11 Diabetes is less common in dogs. It occurs when the body produces insulin but does not effectively utilize it.?

Other causes are obesity and overweight dogs are more likely to develop diabetes. Chronic pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and can damage insulin-producing cells.?

Some medications like the long-term use of some steroids can induce diabetes. Middle-aged and senior dogs are more likely to develop the disease, while female dogs are almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with diabetes.?

?

What are the symptoms of diabetes??

The following changes in your dog’s behavior may indicate that he is at risk of becoming diabetic:?

  • ?Drinking more water than usual.?

  • Urinating a lot.?

  • Changes in her appetite – eating more or less than before.?

  • Unexplained weight loss.?

  • Urinary infections.?

  • Tiredness.?

  • His breath smells sweet.?

  • Poor eyesight.?

If your dog has any of these symptoms, it’s time to visit the vet. Your dog’s blood and urine will be tested for glucose and they will discuss the results and future treatments.

How can I prevent diabetes in my dog??

Even if your dog has a predisposition to develop, there are ways you can reduce the risk and promote a healthy lifestyle.?

  • A healthy diet and weight management go a long way to lessen the chances of your dog developing diabetes. A diet low in sugars and carbohydrates and high in fiber helps to regulate blood sugar levels. Also, portions should be kept appropriate and treats should be limited. Yes, those puppy eyes look like he hasn’t been?fed in a week! But it’s your responsibility to ensure he doesn’t gain weight.?

  • Don't feed her rich and fatty food – it can lead to pancreatitis and diabetes. Make time for regular exercise – it's a cornerstone of her health. An active dog is a happy and healthy dog! Plus, you get to spend quality time together. ?Talk to your vet or health professional about your dog’s lifestyle if you’re concerned about diabetes. It will also help with prevention and early diagnosis. Spaying a female dog can help prevent the risk of diabetes as it lessens hormonal fluctuations.?

What are the treatments for diabetes in dogs??

Although there is no permanent cure for diabetes, it can be managed through medicine and lifestyle adjustments.?

Insulin therapy is the main treatment that your veterinarian will prescribe. He will advise the owner about the use of the medication.?

Dogs that need to lose weight can follow a prescribed weight-loss diet. The food will be high in fiber and help to control blood sugar. If the dog doesn’t need to lose weight, it can also benefit from a diet that includes soluble and insoluble fiber.?

?

Diabetes in dogs is a serious disease. But with the right medical information and treatment, it can be managed and your dog can still have a good quality of life.
