Diabetes and Disk Degeneration Linked
Disk degeneration develops when the disk becomes dehydrated, loses height, and the vertebrae on either side develop bony growths called osteophytes, which can cause or exacerbate lower back pain. In this study, researchers found that individuals with either a ten-plus year history of type 2 diabetes or poor control of their diabetes have an elevated risk for lumbar disk degeneration. Based on these findings, the research team notes that clinicians should screen their diabetic patients for degenerative disk disease. Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research, March 2018
