Causes of Diabetes?

The ICMR-conducted study found that states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh have a risk of diabetes because of several reasons. People in urban areas are at higher risk than those in rural areas, as urban areas are more prone to erratic working hours, pollution, stress, a sedentary lifestyle, and easy access to fast food. Nonetheless, there are other causes.?

  1. Genetics- BBC News found that children with a family history have high glucose levels. A family history of either type-1 or type-2 diabetes increases the risk of developing diabetes.?
  2. Age and Weight—Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement shows the right weight and height according to age. People who are obese or are over 45 years of age may develop diabetes. Testing can help determine the risk of diabetes or pre-diabetes.?
  3. Medications- Medicines such as steroids and statins increase the risk of developing diabetes. Also, blood pressure control medicines can increase diabetes risk.?
  4. Physical Movement- Less physical movement can increase fat cells, leading to weight gain or obesity. Obesity is a direct cause of diabetes. A study found that 4 in 10 adults are overweight and 1 in 10 adults have type-2 diabetes.?
  5. Pancreatic Damage- Pancreatic damage leads to diabetes, known as pancreatogenic diabetes or type 3 diabetes. It is rare in India. However, experts use type 3 diabetes to describe Alzheimer’s disease.?

These are some causes that may lead to diabetes. However, not everyone experiences the same. Type 2 diabetes is the most common among Indians, accounting for over 90% of all diabetes cases. However, Indians suffer from type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder that can be managed with proper treatment like insulin and stem cell therapy.?

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can develop among pregnant women, especially between 24 weeks and 28 weeks, which is 6 to 7 months of pregnancy. A report found that India has the highest number of gestational diabetes cases in Southeast Asia, where urban areas have 7% more risk than rural areas, especially among old-age groups and high socio-economic backgrounds. Gestational diabetes GDM can catch anybody from the age of 15 years to 44 years during pregnancy.?

World Health Organization (WHO) found that 77 million people above the age of 18 are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while 25 million are at risk of prediabetes. They found that diabetes may lead to severe health complications like heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, blood vessel damage, nerve damage or neuropathy, foot ulcers, and infections.?
