Special Collection: Patient Preferences to Inform Decision Making in Medical Product Development

Many preference studies related to treatment choice focus on eliciting patients’ preferences for attributes of treatments that are considered for marketing authorization by regulators. Applications of preference methods to the myriad decisions that sponsors encounter earlier in clinical development have been fewer in number. This Special Collection focuses on applications of patient preference methods to elicit patient input to inform early clinical development decisions.

Patient Engagement Action Plan

Patient involvement in drug development is the key. An interactive DIA Europe 2022 session that had the participation of EFPIA and EPF explored the importance of placing patients and patient experience data at the center. The outcomes of this session were summarized in an article shared at the DIA Global Forum – “Patient Engagement Action Plan: Seven Steps to Move the Needle” ?- and discussions followed in a webinar that included a multistakeholder perspective on the topic. A recent article shared in February on DIA Global Forum consolidated the results and gathered insights from a co-creation exercise held during the webinar with over 100 replies.

Global Annual Meeting Patient Engagement Track

This track addresses meaningful patient engagement in medical product development, from early product development and approval through maintenance phases. It focuses on important questions for all stakeholders, including:

  • How do we meaningfully engage patients and incorporate their voices into decision-making throughout the medical product lifecycle?
  • How do we become truly patient- (and people-) centric in our approach?
  • How do we operationalize patient-centric approaches in our day-to-day work?
