DHL eCommerce Online Shopper Survey
What types of deliveries do your European shoppers really want?
Just like shoppers in the UK, European customers are looking for greater convenience… without the extra cost! But what does delivery convenience mean to them? You might be surprised at just how much it varies from country to country…
The European delivery picture
Over 90% of Europeans say they have abandoned an online purchase because they weren’t offered a delivery that suited them – from home delivery to leaving goods with a neighbour or safe space, or delivery to a parcel locker or parcel shop. Over 90% of Europeans say they have abandoned an online purchase because they weren’t offered a delivery that suited them – from home delivery to leaving goods with a neighbour or safe space, or delivery to a parcel locker or parcel shop. And this is true globally too: 54% of overseas shoppers frequently abandon their baskets due to delivery options (1).
Delivery to parcel lockers or parcel shops is called ‘out-of-home’ – and Polish shoppers in particular have taken to the trend. 49% of Polish consumers want their goods delivered to a parcel locker versus home delivery or other locations. And Swedish (22%) and Czech shoppers (18%) are rapidly switching too!
In fact, Europeans as a whole prefer deliveries to parcel shops and lockers far more than consumers in other continents. As home delivery preference dropped from 73% to 64% in Europe, parcel lockers rose from 13% to 14% and parcel shops from 9% to 10%. That 1% increase may seem small but across the whole of the region, nearly a million people each year are switching from doorstep to out-of-home deliveries!
How can DHL help?
If you want to avoid missing out on European shopper sales by offering them the deliveries they really want, we’re here to help. DHL has the largest out-of-home network in Europe, with over 140,000 access points!

We concentrate our access points where they are really needed: so it’s unsurprising that Poland has the second densest access point offering in Europe, after Germany.
Our access points are conveniently located near to your consumers. Many parcel shops open early and close late, whereas our parcel lockers allow parcels to be sent and received around the clock!
In some European markets, more than 25% of DHL eCommerce’s parcel volume is already delivered to access points. So, with the popularity of out-of-home on the rise, now’s a great time to start offering your international shoppers a wider variety of options to secure their orders.
