Dharavi - Asia’s largest slum, a covid19 hotspot now and it matters!
1 billion US Dollar turnover annually from a slum in India!
No surprise! Yes, Asia’s largest and most densely populated slum belongs to India ???? and Dharavi is been a hot topic recently due to the covid19 outbreak there. Mumbai’s Dharavi, a covid19 hotspot now!
Should we be proud of the fact that the largest slum in Asia belongs to India? That too when it belongs to the the world famous Bombay or Mumbai, that’s where Asia’s richest man also lives, Mr Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man again today after Jio accepted the friend request from Facebook with a whopping 5.7 billion US dollars ( Rs 43,574 crores) and that’s where most of the famous Bollywood celebrities, famous sports personalities are all lives, but the answer is yes! We all should be very very proud of Dharavi. It’s not just a slum and it matters!
Dharavi matters because it’s one of the biggest flourishing hub of industries in India. Dharavi has been evolved and shaped itself over 150 years from just an island of mangrove swamp and unused land to a billion dollar business hub.
Dharavi is home to almost 1 million people and it has an estimated 5,000 business enterprises (GST registered) and 15,000 single room factories which produces some of the world class products and exports goods across the globe ?? . It has industries in leather, textiles, pottery, bricks, wicker making and the list goes on and on. The leather products are even exported to foreign brands in large sums.
Dharavi is also well known for it’s “clean” industry. According to the reports, 60% of Mumbai’s segregated waste comes to Dharavi for processing. 60% of whole Mumbai!!! They are not just collecting waste but they are also creating employment and generating huge income in million dollars out of just waste and scraps.
What you call the worst and waste all seen in Dharavi but the fact is that it’s a slum which has an annual turn over of more than 1 billion US dollars (Rs 7600 crores approx).
That’s all and that’s exactly why Dharavi is very important, a slum which has a big role in the overall economy!
Dharavi has hit by the deadly Covid19 and as per the latest report the total count of infected is around 220 with 14 deaths. A million people lives in an area of 210 hectares makes it very challenging and Critical for the government but it’s time they go extra miles, take initiatives and play an important role to save this slum and it’ people.
Dharavi has experienced and seen the worst epidemics and natural disasters in the past with significant loss of lives starting with the plague in 1896, cholera epidemic in the 1986, where most patients were children of Dharavi and many many more. Now, the covid19 outbreak will be a big blow for not only it’s people but for the entire mumbai and beyond that!
Let’s hope from the Asia’s richest man to the celebrities, political leaders and all come forward to save a million people because Dharavi is not just a Slum, it’s also a billion dollar hotspot business hub. It matters a lot to save Dharavi and it’s people.
