Virtue of the Month: Initiative
Initiative is putting our whisperings and knowing into action. It is approaching life as an opportunity to fully live with creativity and awe. We get curious as we look for ways to be innovative and problem solve. We fully understand that the best ideas will die on the vine if we do not bring them into fruition in the world. We don’t settle for mediocrity; we see opportunities to boldly and confidently walk new paths.
The DH Effect Champion of the Month!
This month we are honoring DHE Champions who exemplify initiative in action.?
José Rodriguez
José has been a champion for people-centered leadership his whole life. It has been a privilege to work with him and his team for almost a year. We are looking forward to continuing the relationship in partnership and as friends. When you meet José, you cannot help but feel instantly drawn to his genuine compassion for humanity and the initiative he takes to walk a bold path in the name of helping his team reach their potential. One of the things we also see as being phenomenal, his leader empowers him to create this type of positive change because José will always give it his very best and find the way to success.
Here are José’s own words:?
I am a first-generation immigrant who settled in Southern California at the age of 4. The two life principles that were rooted in me early on in my journey to this country were a strong work ethic and a compassionate/caring heart. In recent years, I have seen these life pillars take flight in my personal life by the way my family and I choose to serve our community and beyond, and by the way my mother continues to care for my father who suffers with late-stage Parkinson’s.?
In my professional life of over 20 years, I’ve seen how my strong work ethic has contributed to both the team’s success and my professional growth. I have also seen how my compassionate approach has contributed to team effectiveness and my individual relationship. It wasn’t until recently, though, with the help of my manager and Hilary Bilbrey, that I was able to experience how this compassionate approach is truly the elixir to deepening our trust and commitment to each other. The trust journey Hilary has guided the Oncology Development Leadership through over the last 9 months has not only increased the level of authenticity and vulnerability within the leadership team but also more broadly modeled to our staff our trust and commitment to each other in a way that I had never experienced before. Hilary’s approach not only helped bring forth a heart and mind centered alignment within the leadership team, but it also has helped me fully embrace my own compassionate approach, and appreciate that it truly has a place and an impact in the workplace.??
José we thank you for your partnership, leadership and for fully embracing your superpowers of compassion, diligence and perseverance to lead in every capacity of your life. We are honored to call you our June DHE Champion of the month.???
Jenn Boyd
As Westlake High School’s AP Environmental Science teacher, Mrs. Jenn Boyd has been taking initiative from day one to help her students and community understand the interconnectedness between humanity and our natural world. Having the privilege to make an impact on the world directly with young people, her creativity and relentless commitment to find opportunities for students to experience their lessons in active ways have always been her mission. Jenn was the first to gather community resources for her students to build gardens on campus, and has created a well-loved reputation for the teacher who can mimic several bird calls.?
In addition, as an advocate for humanity, unity and justice, her courage to raise difficult conversations on campus has brought teachers, administrators and students together to solve problems creatively and compassionately so that every human being on campus is treated with dignity and respect through understanding.
As the ambassador of education for AwareNow magazine, with a global readership of 8 million, Sonja Montiel was honored to feature Jenn Boyd in the May edition of PAUSE. As our June DHE Champion of the month, you will learn so much more about Jenn’s origin story of how she finds the rainbows of hope throughout her life.?
PEQ Performance Leadership Challenge:
We will be adding a new section to our monthly newsletter that is designed to challenge you to rise to your PEQ Performance as a leader in your home and at work. PEQ (pronounced peak), stands for Positive Intelligence Quotient and Emotional Intelligence Quotient. These are the skills needed to make your mind your friend more than your enemy, while building high-trust connections with your people.???
This month, we challenge you to bring a little fun into recognizing your team. Have the team complete this human bingo game. Give prizes for the first to turn it in completely filled out. Do a drawing for a Starbucks card with anyone who turns in one completed. Make sure everyone sees how they are being acknowledged by their peers. This will help make them feel incredibly seen at a core level.?

Gratitude Tea
Our mission is to make the world a more positive and hopeful place. This is why we host a Gratitude Tea every year, inviting community leaders who share the same mission. Biotech Global Summits
Hilary spent 3 days at global headquarters for a Fortune 250 Biotech Company to facilitate ways of working, teambuilding and trust-building at a company Global Biosimiliars Summit and Global Oncology Development Summit. Highlights were solutioning the siloism that often slows down our decision-making, ways of more effectively sharing information, celebrating the unique contributions of team members and teams and reflecting on our own accountability within the team. All this was accomplished with high energy, curiosity and an enormous dose of playfulness.?
