DFA - Design for Assembly

DFA, is the process of designing products and assemblies so that they can be easily and efficiently assembled. The goal is to increase productivity by making the production process simpler, quicker, and more reliable.

Principles:

  1. Minimize assembly direction. Part is inserted from the top of the assembly. This way assembly is facilitated by gravity rather than fought by it.
  2. Part is self-aligning.
  3. Part does not need to be oriented.
  4. Part requires only one hand for assembly.
  5. Part requires no tools.
  6. Part is assembled in a single-linear motion.
  7. Part is secured immediately upon insertion.
  8. Parts should be designed so that a minimum of manual interaction is necessary during production and assembly.
  9. Design your part to minimise handling, especially during production and assembly.
  10. Make parts independently replaceable.
  11. Minimise the number and type of cable.
