DevOps & SRE are not replacements for conventional ITIL-based roles
We are witnessing a trend of queries on moving towards the Product based model/operating system IT organization and leaving behind conventional ITIL-based roles. But as consultants/experts, we need to recommend what is productive and not what's trending.?
Let us pause and think;?
1- What is the end objective that the customer wants to achieve by shifting towards a product-based model?
2- Is DevOps/SRE can be seen as a replacement for conventional ITIL roles (Incident/Problem/Change/Release managers)??
Responses I have received(so far) say that
"We want to be more customer-centric setup" for the product-based model.?
"We want to adopt the DevOps/SRE as new ways of working" by replacing conventional ITIL roles.?
While DevOps/SRE covers the transformation of the "IT delivery" area, it does not cover the "IT Service management/ governance" area. Conventional ITIL-based roles of process managers bring the culture and practices among all the teams involved in delivering the services from development to operations in ensuring:?
1- customer/business-focused IT delivery and not vice versa?
2- continuous and independent performance reporting and auditing of the?
At the end of the cycle, all products like OLA/UBER, Netflix/Amazon Prime are "services" to customers. And when it comes to the service industry, along with product features, time to market, tools, and technologies involved, quality and compliance become equally important Key Performance Indicators. Hence DevOps/SRE should not be seen as a replacement for conventional ITIL-based roles.?
