Enabling IT Operations - Transforming to DevOps (Vodafone)

Moira Cheng - IT Operations - DevSecOps Transformation Programme Manager, Vodafone

A new experience story about a Programme set out to enable and transform IT Operations for DevOps. DevOps has largely been driven by ‘Dev’ and there has been a general feeling in Operations that DevOps has been ‘done to us’. This is an opportunity to share that Operations are here at the DevOps table and we’d like to demonstrate how this different approach to transformation can work. We’ve got the same ambition. and we’d like to encourage others to closely collaborate with their Operations counterparts to achieve true DevOps harmony.

?My Commentary:

This is a great story as a reference for large companies trying to transition from traditional IT ways of working to modern DevOps practices. Moira has a great vision and inclusive model to bring a traditional IT Operations org forward as part of Vodafone's One Tech Team initiative which plans to hire/retrain 7000+?SW Engineers by 2025!! This initiative targets traditional IT operations staff that are often at risk of getting left behind and helping make these folks relevant now and into the future.?Moira attended DOES 2021 and was inspired by the work the community has done and brought these ideas back to Vodafone.

As part of this effort, Moira and her team brought together teams across the globe to map 63 challenges and stack-rank those to the top 17 by impact and feasibility.?Her team then built an awesome platform based on 1) DevSecOps Survey and 2) A Playbook that acts as an active knowledge base for DevOps.?This Playbook covers: DevOps Principles & Tooling, Team Topologies/Ways of Working, Process Evolution, DevOps Maturity Model, Training/Success Stories and Guidance for IT Operations Managers.

Product Org Design: Flow Follows Form (Europe 2022)

Dr. Mik Kersten - Founder and CEO, Tasktop

Video: https://videos.itrevolution.com/watch/708550206/

Slides: https://github.com/devopsenterprise/2022-virtual-europe/blob/main/Kersten_2022-04%20DOES%20-%20FFF.pdf

My Commentary:

Some of the most important work right now is looking at how Flow and organizational effectiveness is impacted by Software Architecture, Organizational Design and the Processes(dynamics) that enable the flow of work and knowledge.?Mik is one of the best in the industry at analyzing and understanding these problems.?In this talk, Mik digs into how "Flow follows Form" in software orgs, how Conway's Law plays out and how the Role of Leadership is key in configuring the org, assessing its effectiveness and then re-configuring if necessary.?Mik's podcast at projecttoproduct.org is also a great resource for learning more.

What does log4j teach us about the software supply chain? (Europe 2022)

Stephen Magill - Vice President, Product Innovation, Sonatype

?Dr. Stephen Magill was the CEO and co-founder of MuseDev, and is now VP of Product Innovation at Sonatype. He has spent his career developing tools to help developers identify errors, gauge code quality, and detect security issues. Stephen is a world-recognized expert on program analysis and has led multiple large-scale research initiatives including DARPA projects on privacy, security, and code quality. He also served as research lead for the 2020 and 2021 State of the Software Supply Chain reports. Dr. Magill earned his Ph.D. in CS from Carnegie Mellon University, and his BS from the University of Tulsa. He is a member of the University of Tulsa Industry Advisory Board and has served on numerous program committees and funding panels.

My Commentary:

The 2021 holiday season was particularly "memorable" due to the log4hsell zero day exploit.?Teams across the globe scrambled and worked 24/7 to mitigate the issue and remediate if they could.?Stephen takes us through a data-driven look at the incident and reveals some surprising and not so surprising facts backed by rigorous data like: 1) Exemplars remediated within days, 2) Laggards take months/years, 3) Staying secure means staying up to date, 4) Transitive dependencies matter and are hard, 5) Some dependencies will never get upgraded?

Adventures in Agile Auditing: Don’t Just Survive Your Audit… Thrive in it! (Europe 2022)

Clarissa Lucas - Technology Audit Director, Nationwide Insurance

Tod Bickley - AVP Information Risk Management for Identity and Access Management, Nationwide Insurance

Have you ever dreaded an upcoming audit? Do you see the auditors as the “bad guy” or an adversary? Do you wish you got more value out of an audit? If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, then this session is for you. Join leaders from Nationwide Insurance as they show you how they took a page out of your book (or rather a few pages from the following IT Revolution books: The DevOps Handbook, The Phoenix Project, Sooner, Safer, Happier) and applied Agile, Scrum, and DevOps concepts to the internal audit process. Attendees will explore Nationwide’s journey to auditing with agility and learn how they can strengthen the relationship with their auditors, work together with them for a common, value-focused goal, and have fun doing so!

Slides: https://github.com/devopsenterprise/2022-virtual-europe/blob/main/Lucas%20and%20Bickley%20DOES22%20Participant%20Slides.pdf

My Commentary:

The DOES Programming Committee believes this may be one of the most significant presentations on DevOps and borders on the significance of the 2009 Allspaw/Hammond 10 deploys/day talk which left folks awestruck and was the genesis for much of the DevOps community today.?I joked that we should be shooting for: "10 audits/day."?Crazy talk, but yet this is where Nationwide is headed and where we all need to be thinking as an industry.?Clarissa and Todd paint a completely different way of working with audit in an agile way that allows you not only to thrive but produce much better and safer outcomes like: 77% increased audit coverage and 243% increase in audit issue progress!??Watch this talk and be amazed by seeing what the future of audit looks like!

How to Help Teams Interact in a Remote-First World - A Team API Role Play Example (Europe 2022)

Manuel Pais - IT Organizational Consultant, Co-author of Team Topologies, Team Topologies

Matthew Skelton - Founder at Conflux, Co-author, Team Topologies

In the new remote-first and hybrid workplace, many organizations are struggling to catch up with new tooling and ways of working. Many are discovering for the first time that the physical office was covering up poorly defined teams and poorly defined areas of focus, threatening their DevOps transformation efforts and the overall health and success of their business. In this talk, learn how the Team API can be an effective tool to improve the experience of teams that need to interact in a remote setting. What information do they need? Where can they reach us? How can we help them? And how can we evolve the Team API to reduce misunderstandings and turn confrontational situations into productive, valuable insights? The authors of the acclaimed book Team Topologies - Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais - explain and then simulate the use of the Team API pattern using a role play scenario between two teams. They show how an evolving Team API can help to turn confrontations into positive interactions, clarifying expectations and helping teams to work effectively in a remote-first or hybrid context. In their new book, Remote Team Interactions Workbook, published by IT Revolution, Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais, coauthors of the highly popular Team Topologies, provide proven patterns for a successful remote-first approach to teams. Using simple tools for dependency tracking and patterns from Team Topologies, such as the Team API, organizations will find that well-defined team interactions are key to effective IT delivery in the remote-first world.

My Commentary:

Manuel and Matthew gave us one the foundational work around understanding team structures in their book Team Topologies.?This book also formalized the concept of cognitive load and how it relates to a team's effectiveness. The book was published just before the pandemic and the team has evolved their work to support the new realities of how teams should interact in a remote-first world to help manage cognitive load but also improve knowledge sharing and interaction patterns.?This talk takes a pragmatic approach via roleplay to demonstrate how Team Topologies and the Team API approach can improve effectiveness across teams not just in remote scenarios but many complex enterprise team interaction scenarios.?This is so great!
