The Devils Cargo
Denny "Big Rig" Johnson had seen his fair share of lonely highways and dark backroads, but tonight, as he barreled down the desolate stretch of asphalt, something felt eerily amiss. His trusty old truck, "Big Bertha," was groaning under the strain of the heavy load, and Denny knew he was overdue for maintenance. But time was money, and he couldn't afford to lose any more of it.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the road, Denny's eyes strained to stay awake. He hadn't slept properly in days, the stress of life on the road catching up with him. The radio crackled to life, a foreboding voice uttering strange warnings, but Denny shook it off, blaming it on the isolation.
Miles away, a group of four young friends set out on a camping trip to the secluded Pine Valley. Among them was Amy, a bright-eyed 17-year-old with dreams as vast as the starry sky above. She had convinced her friends to embark on this adventure, eager to create lasting memories before they all went their separate ways after graduation.
The night air was charged with excitement as Amy and her friends laughed and chatted, blissfully unaware of the dark fate hurtling towards them. Meanwhile, the Big Bertha raced on, a time bomb ticking under the truck.
Then, it happened. A deafening screech filled the air. Denny felt the cabin shudder and in the rearview mirror, he caught a glimpse of one of his wheels rolling away like a sinister tumbleweed. He slammed on the brakes, and Bertha screeched to a halt, its damaged axle smoking and groaning. Denny's heart pounded like a jackhammer in his chest as he stepped out, his breath mingling with the cold night air.
Panic set in as he realized that the runaway wheel had taken an unexpected turn. It had rolled into a nearby gas station, colliding with the pumps, and unleashing a fiery inferno that engulfed the area. The night sky was painted crimson, and amidst the chaos, Denny heard screams. A horrified realization dawned upon him as he saw the devastation he had caused.

He rushed to the scene, and there, amidst the flickering flames and billowing smoke, lay the lifeless body of a 17-year-old girl, it was Amy. Her dreams, her future, all shattered in an instant. Denny fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face, as guilt and remorse consumed him.
In the days that followed, Denny's conscience became his prison. He faced the consequences of his negligence, not just in the courtroom but in the darkness of his soul. The weight of that night crushed him, haunted him, and he knew he could never escape it. He had taken a life, and no amount of repentance could bring her back.
Through the long hours of soul-searching in jail, Denny realized the horrifying truth: he could have prevented this tragedy. If only he had done his pre-inspection, if only he had taken the time for proper maintenance, that girl might still be alive.
The moral of the story is clear: drivers must always prioritize safety over speed and profit. Neglecting pre-inspections and regular maintenance can have deadly consequences, not just for the driver but for innocent lives as well. No load, no delivery, and no deadline are worth risking the safety of others.
As the years passed, the ghost of that fateful night remained with Denny, a reminder of the cost of negligence and the importance of doing the right thing, always and without fail. For deep in the heart of every winding highway, the Devil's Cargo still rolls on, carrying the burden of its dark past, while one man fights to make amends for a mistake that can never be undone.
