In this Article we learn about Device42 and its Main Appliance Installation in VMWare VCenter.

What is Device42 ?

Device42 is a complete IT infrastructure management software bundle. It was founded on the notion that having correct visibility throughout the complete IT stack end-to-end is the foundation for being able to do everything else.

Planning migrations, discovering applications, and comprehending the interdependencies between applications and infrastructure are all supported by a variety of tools and functions offered by Device42.

Device42 Main Appliance and Device42 Remote Collector Appliance -

The Main appliance and remote collectors in Device42 cooperate to gather and manage information about your IT infrastructure.

Device42's Main Appliance - serves as the main centre for gathering, managing, and storing information about your IT assets, network connections, and other pertinent data.

Tasks including asset detection, IP address management, application dependency mapping, and report generation fall under the purview of the main appliance.

It gives a user interface for administrators and users to access and manage the data and serves as a central store for all acquired data.

Device42 Remote Collector - Device42 instances called remote collectors can be set up in various areas of your network or at faraway places.

Data from particular parts of your infrastructure are collected by these collectors in combination with the main appliance.

Agentless and agent-based discovery are available from Device42

Agentless discovery collects information from devices using industry-standard protocols, whereas agent-based discovery collects information using software agents installed on devices.

Installation Steps -

Now lets download and install Device42 -

Download Main Appliance -

https://device42.com/download

After filling the form, we will get an email with Trial License

In email we will get link to download appliances, license keys and links for AWS/AZure marketplace images.

In this case we are downloading Virtual Appliance for VMWare and License Key

Import ova file in VCenter and start the Device42 instance.

We will have to use below default credentials

username : device42

password : adm!nd42

We will be presented with screen where we can make changes if required -

Configure IP/Networking, select option 1 -

If required, we can configure other setting like NTP, password change.

When the configuration is done, access the application on browser -

https://192.168.200.50

Use default credentials -

Username -admin

Password - adm!nd42

When prompted change the password -

Apply license -

Run Hosts Discovery Job -

Discovery > ?Hypervisors/*nix/win for Autodiscovery

When prompted set the Passphrase

Now we will scan hosts in our network -

Click on Add Hypervisiors/*nix/win for Autodiscovery -

Enter details like below -

In above we have set the Password / Secret? -

Run the Job -

We can check the status -

Check status Dashboard.

Analytics > Jobs Dashboard?

Check Resources and we can see that it has discovered Linux Hosts -?

Select mysql host and check Applications -

We can see it has discovered MySQL and Apache servers.

Conclusion: We have installed Device42 Main Virtual Appliance in VCenter, discovered Linux Hosts and Applications working on it.
