Development and Growth: Debunking the “Arrival” Mindset

Development and Growth: Debunking the “Arrival” Mindset

This article originally appeared in the March/April issue of OfficePro ?

It’s natural to view a role, an achievement or even a title as an endpoint—as if we’ve finally “arrived.” We might not openly admit it, but deep down, many of us believe that once we reach a certain stage, the work is done. This mindset can be tempting, even for executives who’ve reached the highest levels. However, great leaders understand that growth and learning are ongoing journeys, not destinations. As organizations evolve, businesses adapt and technology advances, continuous learning becomes essential to keep pace.?

One of the most effective ways to ensure ongoing development is through credentialing. Unlike a degree, which may simply be displayed on a wall, certifications require active maintenance through skill-building and education. This commitment keeps your knowledge current and your skills sharp.?

At IAAP, we believe in the transformative power of credentialing—it’s a cornerstone of our mission. We are dedicated to giving every eligible administrative professional access to the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) designation. Equally important is our work in helping organizations recognize the value of CAP for their administrative teams.?

Many of you are already part of this movement, and we’re grateful for your support! If you’re interested in contributing to this vital work—whether as an administrative professional or an executive advocate—here are a few ways you can get involved:?

  • Explore the CAP Body of Knowledge and Share It: The administrative profession is dynamic and exists across every industry. This makes defining the role challenging. The CAP Body of Knowledge, updated in 2023, offers a comprehensive overview of the skills and competencies critical for success in the field. Download it from our website and share it with your colleagues and organization. It’s a valuable tool for streamlining job duties, refining role descriptions and identifying growth opportunities.?

  • Pursue Certification (or Encourage Others To): If you’ve been considering certification, there’s no better time than now! The journey can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to go it alone. Connect with others in your organization or the IAAP online community to find a certification champion. If you’re already certified and willing to support someone else on their path, post in the community and offer your guidance.?

  • Advocate for CAP in Your Organization: Speak with your HR department about making CAP preferred or required within 18 months of hire for administrative roles. A CAP designation not only helps candidates stand out but also ensures your organization hires individuals committed to continuous learning and professional growth.?

  • Maintain Your Certification with Ongoing Education: Achieving certification is a significant accomplishment—keep it current by recertifying every three years. Use the CAP Body of Knowledge to guide your professional development, focusing on areas that challenge you and expanding your skill set.?

Administrative professionals are invaluable to organizations across the globe. At IAAP, our commitment to elevating the profession isn’t about creating value—it’s about showcasing the value that already exists. Credentialing is a powerful way to do that, and we’re grateful for your involvement, whether as an admin, advocate, ally or all the above!?
