Developing a Strategic Mindset

Developing a Strategic Mindset

Creating a strategy is always about maximizing your ability to enter a situation and walk away with what you want. Building a solid business strategy increases your chances of achieving your desired outcome.

Strategy is a part of your everyday life.

Some people are nervous about discussing a business strategy because they want help understanding it and are often unsure how to develop a strategic plan. The method is used every day of your life, whether you realize it or not, and it is nothing to be afraid of. Strategy is asking yourself questions to enter a situation and leave with the desired outcome. For example, if the goal is an exploratory meeting - What is my purpose? How should I approach the conversation to obtain the information I require? When you respond to these questions, you are creating a strategy.

Know What You Want

Without a specific goal to guide your efforts, it can be very difficult to achieve your desired result. Creating a strategy based on results implies that you are particular to the person or audience you are working with. You only reach your desired outcomes if you have an adequate strategy that adjusts your approach to different situations. This is true both in person and on the internet. If you use LinkedIn, your system should be to connect with new people in your industry. Your strategy is to communicate with them, build a relationship, and then let them figure out why they need you. It should not be to connect before launching into a hard sales pitch. This rarely works because the person knows very little about you, has never heard of you, and you have no relationship - this is bad form. A better LinkedIn strategy is to connect with them and explain why you want to communicate with them - make it about them, not you.

Improve Your Outcomes

In business, strategy is always about maximizing your ability to enter a situation and get something out of it. As a result, you must approach the problem strategically and with a goal in mind. You can reverse engineer your strategy once you know your plan. When conducting business, keep your desired outcome in mind - how can I get where I need to go? To achieve a clear, ideal result, you must first consider what the other person wants and needs and how they can benefit from your offer. This reverse engineering enables you to create a tight strategy centered on outcomes to maximize your results.

Impact Reactions

Creating an outcome-focused strategy allows you to plan meetings that put you in control of emotional reactions. Because it emphasizes outcomes, going into a meeting with clear objectives focused on the result allows you to reduce the number of emotional responses people on your team may have. One of the most critical aspects of strategy is ensuring that others understand clearly and precisely that you arrived at a plan and that you mean business.
