Developing Respectful Discourse?Between Those who Disagree Politically Using Historical Improvisation
This is our NEW FEL!X module, which was requested and designed for SAJ’s synagogue SOJAC (Social Action Justice Committee). Under the leadership of Myra Zuckerbraun, SOJAC is a proactive group of dynamos who organize educational forums and speakers on critical issues of our day.
With FEL!X: Get Ready to Stretch Your Empathy Muscles!
The FEL!X methodology enables participants to walk in the shoes of figures from diverse generations and cultures that include historic (rulers, artists, writers, and unsung heroes) – and sometimes mythological and literary characters.
Over the course of four sessions, you will use drama to take on the identity of diverse historical characters in a supportive environment designed to nurture your empathetic and listening skills and enable you to engage with people from vastly different perspectives in a respectful manner. Whether your intention is to better understand another's perspective or to try to change their mind, FEL!X's unique methodology will help you discover how to connect. You will learn not just to hear people's opinions, but to listen for the values and experiences that underlie their viewpoints. Sometimes after better understanding another point of view, your own perspective may change. You may even see commonalities between yourself and others you formerly disregarded.
Methodology
FEL!X’s methodology provides a safe and engaging environment that encourages participation and collaboration. Behavioral rules – agreed upon by all participants – are balanced with game-like features. A carefully constructed sequence of prompts eases participants into discussing uncomfortable issues from multiple points of view. FEL!X then provides an opportunity for each participant to address the topic from their own personal perspective, surfacing struggles they may have resisted acknowledging either to themselves or to others. Modules include a set of participant assessments that identify problems that may need to be addressed, as well as measure participants’ progress.?

Learning to view contemporary issues through a historical perspective develops critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, a greater understanding of broad issues, and a sense of being part of history. In addition, multiple social-emotional skills (self-expression, self-confidence, empathy, listening, and the ability to foster dialogue) are richly enhanced.
