Developing leaders by sharing knowledge

Developing leaders by sharing knowledge

I was reading some statistics about LinkedIn over the weekend.

Launched in 2003; acquired by Microsoft in 2016.

Over 1 billion accounts in more than 200 countries.

#innovation the most searched hashtag.

43 million accounts in the UK (population 69m - there are 56m Facebook accounts!).

And then it got interesting...

Only 16.2% of users are active daily.

Only 3% of members post more than once a week.

On average, users spend only 17 minutes on LinkedIn every month.

20m of the UK's users are in the 25-34 years old age range.

Only 2% of users are aged 55 years or older.

In other words, if you're a regular contributor you're in a minority - and you have very limited opportunity to persuade others to join you.

I found that telling in the context of LinkedIn's mission to:

Connect the world's professionals to make them more productive and successful.

When I was in that 25-34 age range what I valued most were the thoughts and advice of those towards the end of their careers. It was in those conversations that I learned things of real insight, acquiring knowledge that I still use to this day.

If only 2% of users are over 55, is a trick being missed?

I'm not there yet, but I will be before long - and that's why I've been putting work into #TheGovEnhanceGuru.

I'm passionate about crafting my articles as a means to share my insights and experiences.

I'm convinced that passing on knowledge is a vital responsibility we owe to future generations. We all have to make a living, but not every piece of guidance should come with a price tag. Sometimes, the most important lessons are those we give freely.

My goal is to offer opinions, to spark positive change in governance, to nurture the emerging leaders of tomorrow, and to bridge the gaps between organisations and sectors.

Together, we all share the responsibility of making the world a better place, and I'm excited to play my part in doing so.

Great insights, Andrew! I agree that sharing knowledge and engaging with professionals is essential, especially in today’s fast-paced world where meaningful interactions can often get lost. It’s a powerful way to build connections, exchange ideas, and support the growth of both clients and peers. Thanks for sparking this important conversation!

Andrew Hughes as ever thought provoking. Passing on knowledge is so critical and I love my lecturing role for that reason. I might also add, releasing knowledge within organisations from the many years of experience and expertise is equally valuable. Individually we know very little, collectively we know so much more.
