Developing Leaders, Not Followers

Developing Leaders, Not Followers

"The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers." - Ralph Nader

I am currently working with a client struggling to grow because the organization has failed to develop its managers and leaders. I wish I could say this was rare, but I see it in more businesses than not.

Developing leaders shouldn’t be just a checkbox for any business that aims to thrive; it should be a core competency alongside your product or service. When a company commits to growing its people, it builds a culture of resilience, creativity, and sustained success.

Failing to develop leaders can have significant, far-reaching consequences for an organization. Without intentional leadership development, teams often lack direction, motivation, and the agility needed to adapt to change.

Consequences of poor leader development:

  • High turnover & low morale
  • Stagnation & lack of innovation
  • Inconsistent performance & accountability
  • Erosion of culture
  • Heavy reliance on outside hires

Leading Yourself: Set the Standard for Development

As leaders, we set the tone for our organization’s commitment to growth. By prioritizing personal and professional development, we demonstrate that growth is not just an ideal—it’s an expectation.

Developmental coaching isn’t only for others; it’s a mindset that starts with our own growth. When you commit to ongoing self-reflection, learning, and improvement, you model the behaviors that create more leaders.
