Developing Leaders for 2020 Work
Jerry Busone
Everyday’s a clean slate you don’t know what will happen so have a great-attitude and do your best
2020 workforce is here and leaders have a different set of needs from the companies to meet the challenges they face everyday. Leader Development programs should be evaluating their offerings and discuss how they meet todays leader development needs.
“According to a study by the American Management Association, 48% of organizations believe that developing global capabilities in their leaders is a top priority. That being said, only 18% of multinational companies say they have the strong global leadership pipeline necessary to meet their future business challenges.” Forbes
Today leaders have to manage a workforce that is very very different from how they were lead. The global workforce today is complex and diverse, has associates with a lot of different needs and different work styles.
Are leader development programs ready to meet those needs? Since I've retired I have been speaking with many companies who see guidance on developing leaders . Most don’t have a clear vision on what their leaders need or how to develop them.
Leader training today has to be a combination of education, experience, and exposure.
Education from a blended classroom approach , experience from both internal and external experiences and exposure from a sponsorship program.
The list I’ve come across is not new, or even mine but is in my words from my expertise what I’ve been able to read, gather and consult what leaders need to meet the 2020 workforce.
- Be extremely agile and flexible. They need help with meeting the needs of their market as it evolves and changes.
- To that note above they need help getting externally connected and on top of the trends that are happening. Markets and economies change on a dime and leaders need help adapting to that world.
- Leading today is dependent on excellent collaboration . Leaders need training on how to manage stakeholders externally across their enterprise, which for most leaders is a new skill .
- Leaders need skills on how to effectively manage a workforce that is very complex and diverse as well ad leveraging the ‘gig’ economy where companies are leveraging temporary help and expertise .
- Finally leaders need sponsors. A sponsor program especially for driving diversity and women in leadership. People need internal and external sponsors to champion their learning and development .
Overall leader programs should evaluate are they give associates exposure, pulling them into opportunities where they may not naturally get the opportunity.as well as the classic leader topics.
Leading has changed consider stepping into the new world and connecting with the 2020 workforce.
