Developing a hip pocket skill

As per Indra Nooyi, former PepsiCo CEO, developing a hip pocket skill at the early stage of your career is crucial to success in the long term.

A hip pocket skill is anything that sets you apart from others and something you are known for. It's not a hard skill, but a soft one.

A hip pocket skill can be anything, like

  • ability to communicate extremely complex ideas in simple words,
  • ability to bring consensus to a group,
  • creativity,
  • inductive or deductive thinking.

Anything for which you become a go-to person for.

Hip pocket skills are not easy to come by. When you identify it, its up to you to expand, stay current with it and remain an expert at it.
