Developing Future Leaders: Are We Truly Empathetic to Their Journey?

Developing Future Leaders: Are We Truly Empathetic to Their Journey?

I’ve noticed that as leaders, we sometimes forget the struggles we faced when we were just starting out.

Recently, an experienced leader shared with me their surprise at a young professional’s hesitation to engage in difficult conversations. We discussed how developing communication skills takes time, practice, and courage - something that doesn’t happen overnight.

The same applies to developing leadership skills. We often forget that building confidence in these areas takes time and patience, as it's part of an ongoing learning curve. When nurturing new leaders, we must remain mindful of this process, recognising that each person learns and grows at their own pace.

Reflecting on my own career, I’ve learned that leadership growth is rarely linear. Early on, I struggled to find my voice in tough situations, and it took years of experience - and plenty of mistakes - to get where I am today. (Spoiler Alert: the learning doesn't stop!)

Journaling, ongoing learning, and regular conversations with emerging leaders have helped to keep me me grounded in the early challenges I once faced—an essential perspective when supporting the growth of the next generation of leaders.

In today’s fast-paced world, we must recognise that what worked for us in the past may not apply to those stepping into leadership roles now. The way people lead and are led is always evolving—what motivated teams years ago might not resonate with today’s workforce, as expectations, values, and leadership styles shift.

Success isn’t a formula that can simply be repeated—it requires adapting to new environments, trusting your instincts, and building your own path. All skills that take time to develop.

As we develop future leaders, how can we better support their growth? How do you stay empathetic to their learning curve?

Important to think about this. Frontline leaders face more challenges than ever due to the changing pace of work and expectations. Senior leaders must start by recognising middle managers are the most crucial component to success. Gaining an understanding of their reality, enabling them to act effectively and building the required mindsets should be the priority for any organisation looking to make meaningful improvement

It certainly does take time, we need to stretch leaders to grow beyond their comfort zone to expand not only their skills but essentially their mindset
