Developing digital skills for the future workforce

Developing digital skills for the future workforce

Digital skills are all the rage these days. Everyone is talking about how important they are for the future workforce, and how we all need to be developing them if we want to stay relevant and competitive in the job market. But let's be real, is this really the case? Is digital literacy really the be-all and end-all of career success? I'm not so sure.

First off, let's define what we mean by "digital skills." Are we talking about coding? Graphic design? Social media management? SEO? The term is so broad and ambiguous that it's difficult to know exactly what we're talking about. And even if we were to pinpoint a specific set of skills, are they really that important? Sure, knowing how to code might be useful if you're looking to land a job as a software developer. But what about jobs that don't require that level of technical expertise? Is it really necessary for a nurse or a teacher to know how to code?

And even if we do accept that digital skills are important, the question remains: is it necessary for everyone to develop them? After all, not everyone is cut out for a career in tech. Some people simply don't have the aptitude or interest. And that's okay. There are plenty of other careers that don't require digital literacy. So why are we putting so much emphasis on developing these skills? Are we creating a society where only those who are digitally literate are deemed valuable and employable? Is that really the kind of future we want?

But perhaps the biggest issue with the hype around digital skills is that it distracts us from other important skills that are just as, if not more, crucial for the future workforce. Critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and emotional intelligence are just a few examples. These skills are not only important for career success, but for life success. And yet, we're so focused on developing digital skills that we're neglecting these other vital areas.

In conclusion, I'm not saying that developing digital skills isn't important. It's certainly useful to have some level of digital literacy, especially in today's world. But let's not get carried away and make it out to be the end-all and be-all of career success. There are many other skills that are just as important, if not more so. So let's start putting more emphasis on developing these skills and less on the digital skills.
