Developing A Digital Mindset by Following The 30% Rule

Developing A Digital Mindset by Following The 30% Rule

This was a special book launch week for my co-author Paul Leonardi and me. We finally released our book: The Digital Mindset: What It Really Takes to Thrive in the Age of Data, Algorithms, and AI.?

Paul and I have been collaborating on topics related to digital work, and digital tools for the last two decades. Our work always sought to develop frameworks to help employees and leaders to become more digitally equipped. In the Digital Mindset book, we sought to answer these frequently asked questions about becoming more digitally competent:

  1. How much technical capability do I need??
  2. Do I need to learn how to code??
  3. What do I need to know about algorithms??
  4. What do I need to understand about big data??
  5. How do I use digital tools effectively??
  6. What exactly is AI??
  7. Do I need to prepare to have a bot or robot on my team??
  8. How do I collaborate successfully when people are working remotely??
  9. What are the best ways to make sure my data and systems are secure??
  10. How do I develop skills to compete in a digital economy??
  11. Is digital transformation different than other transformations??
  12. How do I build a digital-first culture??
  13. Where do I start??

Our message in this book is simple: If you develop a digital mindset and follow the 30% rule to develop it, you’ll be able to answer these questions and many more.?

We define a digital mindset as a set of approaches we use to make sense of, and make use of, data and technology. This set of attitudes and behaviors enable people and organizations to see new possibilities and chart a path for the future.?

Here’s the good news: To develop a digital mindset, you won’t need to master the intricacies of programming, how to build your own algorithms, or how to run advanced multinomial logit models. You may end up doing those things someday, but our focus in our new book is only on what you need to be digitally proficient. You only need about 30 percent fluency in a handful of technical topics to develop your digital mindset. We call this the 30 percent rule. Over the course of our book, we specify the categories of skills in the areas of collaboration, computation and change. Redefining approaches to these three areas means learning some new concrete skills.?

But it’s not enough just to build skills. Skills give you the vocabulary, knowledge, and intuition to see the bigger picture—to ask the important questions. We identify what 30 percent competence looks like in each of those categories. Once you have achieved that 30 percent (or more than 30 percent if you are interested to do more), you will have created the platforms from which you’ll start to think differently—to think digitally.?

The best thing about starting your digital mindset journey is that you will quickly start seeing your place in the digital future. You’ll be helping to blaze pathways into that future that create value for you, and your organization.??
