Developing 3-D Leadership

We all know what a 3-D movie is, but what’s 3-D Leadership?

Think about your leadership as a function of three interdependent but distinct roles:

1.?????What to do:?This includes the basics of all leadership skills.?Examples include communicating important information, motivating others, building team collaboration, and managing change.

?2.?????How to see:?This includes setting a vision for the team or organization and helping connect the work to a larger purpose.?It also entails creating a strategy and navigating the team dynamics to achieve that vision and purpose.

?3.?????How to be:?This entails developing the self-awareness and relationship skills needed to do everything in number one and two above in a way that others are receptive and totally engaged.?

Great leaders pay attention to all three of these roles and work to grow in each consistently and continually.?

But in my experience leaders are focused primarily on number one.?Some advance to include number two.?Most ignore or miss the most important number three.?

This is ironic because “How to be” is the foundation of all leadership skills and should be the primary focus of all leaders.?It seems we have the evolution of leadership development backwards, which explains a lot about the absence of great leadership today.

So, my question to you great leaders is what have you found to be a way to increase your self-awareness, build your relationship skills, and develop 3-D leadership??

Great leaders always start by thinking about the "Why" then move to "How" and concluding with the "What". I want to be a 3-D Leader.

Steve thanks for emphasizing the importance of #3, HOW TO BE! As an executive speaking coach I've learned that this is an area in which many need significant growth. I've found that by teaching leaders to communicate conversationally, I've helped them to build the relationships skills that are so vital. What suggestions do you have for building those skills?

Steve Swavely, Ph.D., CCP, I really love your 3-leader concept, I especially resonate with -“How to be”?is the foundation of all leadership skills and should be the primary focus of all leaders.- Thanks.

You captured the image of a 3D leader so well, Steve Swavely,, I periodically seek feedback from others to ensure I'm not missing any blind spots in how I show up as a leader. Their insight, feedback and guidance is invaluable.

Spot on, Steve! I think many leaders do #1 as you mention and we need to most work on #3. I try to get feedback from those around me on how I'm doing. I will ask how I handled a certain situation or what I could have done differently or better to ensure I continue to build relationships. Thanks for the article.
