[A superb book available on Amazon]

Bill Palmer, the VP of IT Operations (main character) about developers:

"...to me they seem more like Indie musicians than engineers.

In my days, developers wore pocket protectors - not vintage T-shirts and sandals - and carried slide rulers, not skateboards. In many ways, these guys are my temperamental opposites. I like people who create and follow processes, people who value rigor and discipline. These guys shun a process in favor of whim and whimsy.

But thank goodness they're here."

Some time ago, one of my customer, said to me that my/his team don't follow the strict procedure's steps. I ask him if he care about creativity? He said me: obviously, is mandatory! Than forgot about strict procedures, I said... Procedures is excellent for leaders or PMs but not for developers or architects! They must be creative and creativity it doesn't fit any procedure ...

Yeah, processes are to be followed. Discipline is a must. But only following processes and being disciplined one won't be able to solve any new problem. Creativity is to lead at least to improved processes if not to completely new processes, that are to be followed... And so on.
