Develop An Employee Recognition Program

Develop An Employee Recognition Program

Do you remember the last time that you were recognized on your job for going the extra mile? Did a coworker or supervisor say thank you within the last two weeks? This question is generally asked during an exit interview, but I have had conversations with current and former employees about this subject just in casual conversations...you would be surprised on the feedback that I have received.

Many of the employees felt that they were not valued or appreciated for their contributions that they make within their organization. Why? Well, companies don't offer incentives or awards to their employees through recognition programs.

One of the ways in which to motivate employees is by having an 'Employee Recognition Program.' Having a recognition program is vital to employee engagement and can increase the morale and productivity in your organization.

Do you want loyal and motivated employees working for you? ...well, I suggest that if you don't already have a recognition program in place, now is the time to consider developing one. However, before you develop your program contact your HR Department to establish the purpose and criteria of the program.

There are many ways in which to recognize and reward employees. The following are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Offer flex time to employees.
  • Have an ice cream social for a team that completed a project on schedule.
  • Reward department-specific performance.
  • Celebrate birthdays and string a birthday banner across the work area, or send birthday cards home signed by the vice president of the company.
  • Give an employee a company mug filled with treats.
  • Recognize those who are committed to personal health and wellness.
  • Designate an employee recognition parking space close to the building.
  • Give employees items from the online store with the company logo.

It would be a good idea for companies to recognize employees within their first year of employment. Younger workers are staying in their jobs, on average for 18 months. I worked at a job where you had to wait three years to be recognized for an employee service award; after waiting for three years, the employee recognition program was discontinued.

Management should look at employee recognition as an investment and not an expense. Over time, just spending those few extra dollars can create a supportive work environment among employees and increase morale and motivation.
