To Develop Advanced 'Physical AI' Technology: “Robotis Partners with MIT”

On November 19, Robotis Co. said that it is working with the 美国麻省理工学院 (MIT) to create "Physical AI," a state-of-the-art robot technology designed to improve physical intelligence. This collaboration is a component of a global cooperative research and development (R&D) effort that the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy's Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) is spearheading with government assistance.

Physical AI, which focuses on producing accurate physical forces similar to human skills, has gained popularity in the robotics sector in recent years. Robotis, renowned for its top-tier precision robot technology, and MIT academics, who have vast experience in robot production and control, have partnered to realize this idea. This partnership aims to create technology capable of manipulation on par with that of humans.

Physical AI must be able to react reflexively utilizing a high-level sensing system and the findings of that sensing to manipulate at the human level. This calls for artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can actively detect and react to a variety of changes in the real-world environment, regulate reflex reactions, and gain knowledge from every circumstance. The physical AI technology created in this partnership is anticipated to be utilized in Robotis's next collaborative robot, "OpenMANIPULATOR-Y (OM-Y)." With human-level manipulation capabilities, OM-Y is anticipated to function more effectively in a greater range of industrial settings than its current gripper-type end-effector.

Robotis's CEO, Kim Byung-soo, was excited about the collaboration, saying, "We have high expectations for the synergy that will be achieved when Robotis's experience and technological prowess meet with the distinguished scholars of MIT." He said, "As 'Physical AI' is expected to become the biggest topic in the robotics industry, we will focus on producing results by seizing this great opportunity."
