Devastating Maui Fires: How to help

On 08Aug2023: My beautiful island home of Maui suffered multiple catastrophic wildfires due to a combination of dry vegetation from drought conditions, low humidity, and unusually high winds accelerated by Hurricane Dora passing far south of Hawaii. One of the hardest hit areas was the historic and popular tourist destination of Lahaina, which was once the capital of the former Hawaiian kingdom. Power, cellular and landline services have been wiped out.

As of 10Aug2023: The current Lahaina Maui death toll has risen to 36 souls with more than 270 structures damaged or completely reduced to ashes. These include homes, resorts, commercial buildings and historical sites. Fire containment, emergency rescue, recovery, and damage assessments are still ongoing.?

Heartbreaking images of the devastation can be found on this Maui News site: https://mauinow.com/2023/08/10/lahaina-front-street-photo-journey-west-maui-wildfire-aftermath/

#MauiStrong 11Aug2023 Update: As of this morning, the official death toll has increased to 55 souls with at least a couple of dozen suffering serious burns or in critical condition. Sadly, these numbers are expected to rise even higher over the coming days. Fires are actively burning but have reportedly been 80% contained in Lahaina. Thousands of people are being housed in emergency shelters with tens of thousands of people without power. Water and cell service also remain down in some areas. Many are in desperate need of basic essentials. Any support that you could provide would be greatly appreciated. On a personal note, I’m so very thankful that my immediate and extended family and friends in Hawaii are safe. Unfortunately, I also know of others who haven’t located all of their loved ones. My heart and prayers go out to them and everyone else who is suffering from this tragedy on the island. I live on the mainland but my heart is always in Hawaii, particularly my childhood home of Maui. I’ve donated via the Hawai?i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund. Please consider helping out in any way that you can!
