"The Devastating Effects of Prolonged Sitting: How to Avoid the Health Risks of a Sedentary Lifestyle"

As the holiday season approaches, I wanted to get this week's edition of the newsletter out a little earlier. While I'll be taking some time off to spend with my family and relax, I'm looking forward to indulging in some good food and quality time with loved ones. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Christmas too!

This year has been a whirlwind of activity as I navigated the challenges presented by the Covid pandemic. While it was difficult to see my business wiped out, I've taken it as an opportunity to rebuild and start anew. It's been a tough but rewarding journey as I've worked to get my business back on track. Overall, it's been a hectic year, but I'm excited to see where the future takes me.

One of my primary goals this year has been to raise awareness about the negative consequences of prolonged sedentary behaviour. While it may be difficult to eliminate prolonged sitting from our lives, I believe that taking proactive measures to prevent negative health outcomes is always preferable to seeking cures after the fact.

Prolonged sitting can lead to muscle imbalances that can affect joint mobility and overall function. This can result in various musculoskeletal issues that can impact our ability to move and perform daily activities.

By thoroughly evaluating an individual's movement patterns, we can identify the root cause of any muscular imbalances and provide targeted exercises to address these issues. This may involve addressing muscle length, tightness, weakness, or inactivity to optimise overall muscle function and movement efficiency.

By incorporating more movement and standing into your daily routine, you can benefit your health and well-being. Some simple ways to do this include;

  • Taking breaks from sitting every half hour
  • Standing while conducting phone conversations or Zoom meetings
  • Using a sit-to-stand desk that Floyd Sayers specialises in.
  • Walking for meetings instead of sitting in a conference room
  • Incorporating stretches or exercises throughout your working day to address the issues of pain you may experience in your body.

These small changes can make a big impact on your overall health.

This year has also brought a lot of new clients, particularly those who are in their 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Movement is a crucial component of overall health and wellness, regardless of age.

By actively working on improving physical abilities and mobility, we can enhance our quality of life and positively impact our overall well-being. It is important to consider where an individual is currently in their health and body journey and tailor their exercise plan to meet their specific needs and goals. By taking small steps towards progress, we can empower ourselves to live our best lives through the transformative power of movement.

So, that leads me to ask you a question for the up and coming new year.

What are your plans for your health, body and fitness?

We all usually have a thought process around health, wealth and relationships or health, relationships and freedom. Leave me a comment on this newsletter and I'll be sure to give you a response if you have anything specific you would like to ask then feel free.

Have a wonderful Christmas :)

Best, James Bacon

Hi James thanks for the mention, much appreciated. Love the work you're doing with your clients. Love this line in your newsletter - "Live our best lives through the transformative power of movement" As you know sitting is a habit and a big part of our work culture, the things you've identified are simple to do but not easy! Changing our sedentary behaviours is hard work, but it can all start with a micro-break, the power of a pause! This allows us to pull away from the computer and reconnect our mind with our body to move. Have a great Xmas

Well-timed James Bacon. Just about to get off my backside and take the dog for a walk as I have been sitting too long creating content for my business. Very easy to let time get away with you when in creative mode.
