Dev Bootcamp Shutdown
The situation at Dev Bootcamp is extremely unfortunate as they were pioneers in the bootcamp space. They produced a variety of graduates that opened the eyes of employers across the country per the quality of employees that could be hired from a coding bootcamp.
When we started our program, we had already had 25 years of experience in the corporate IT training community and indeed witnessed many changes in that time. I'm not sure if there is a correlation between Caplan's purchase of DBC and their going out of business or not. I can however see that a corporate view regarding the profitability of a bootcamp may be negative as bootcamps aren't designed to be extremely profitable. At the same time, when we created our bootcamp, we decided to focus on Java as opposed to Ruby as there were far more jobs in the Java Developer space nationwide. I can say that due to our smaller classes and overall curriculum our students have a great deal of success in landing programmer jobs at corporations world wide. With that said, this success has come with a great deal of challenges including high costs of instructional staff as well profit issues. In the bootcamp space, the institution's focus absolutely needs to be helping individuals achieve success. This is a value that we instill in every member of our staff and in everything we do as a company. We would be in the absolute wrong business if our angle was profit.
I'm of the opinion that while DBC closing is certainly not a good situation, the bootcamp industry as a whole is very strong. It's this type of alternative education that will change the job market as a whole moving forward. We are now seeing more corporations interested in graduates as well as sponsored bootcamps whereas a year ago, they wouldn't give us the time of day. I wouldn't let this hurdle deter anyone from joining a bootcamp and accomplishing their overall goals. I would simply caution all individuals to be cautious and do their research prior to making their final decision on which bootcamp to invest in. Look at reviews and ask questions regarding average class size and not only student placement rates but also the job titles of students that were placed and the companies that hired said graduates. #DBCShutdown

6 年I have been offering training services to IT Vendors and corporations for over 37 years.? Having seen it all, I can tell you that no matter how good your management was, your biggest problem was not continually restructuring your business to follow the business needs and therefore the money.? That's everyone's mistake and the ones that learn the lesson, go on.? The ones that don't close down.? I have seen countless IBM and Microsoft business partners close.? It's always due to high overhead and lack of business.? You could be on top of the hill one year and in the valley the next … but no matter where you were, you still had high overhead if you offered classroom training.? The only companies that survive are the ones that continually reinvent themselves.? Let's face it … Java programmers are a dime a dozen these days.? They graduate with coding skills that rival engineers in the 1980's.? Boot camp offerings compete with online training, self-study, public classes, cheap private classes in India … once Java became a commodity, it was time to move on to something different.? You need to stay ahead of the curve.? I have seen SQL training come and go.? Same with Case Tools, Systems Programming, OS/2, Mainframe, WebSphere, IMS, CICS, DB2, AS/400, … I could go on, but you know what I'm getting at.? Today, the action is in Leadership skills like ITIL, Agile PM, Scrum, Six Sigma because students can't learn it in college.? It's also about Cloud Computing, Azure, Cloud Security, Windows Exploitation, Testing, Forensics … you need to stay ahead of the curve, keep the old stuff in case you need it and create new boot camps in security or leadership skills … the things that are more relevant today.? Since the federal government was cyber attacked and continues to be, there is a huge upswing in cybersecurity.? It's a moving target, but we know that security will be here for the foreseeable future.
