Deutsche Telekom breached!
Yet another Telecommunications giant has suffered one more data breach. I have just got the following notification to my email inbox:
Dear Customer,
As part of the prevention of abuse, our security experts receive information about illegal publication of customer data. During the research, it became apparent that your login details were improperly stolen and are being offered on the Internet.
It concerns the following data for your access number 599018963552: mprerad [@] gmail.com
The following Telekom password (passwords) is affected: - Password (e-mail center, customer center)
This data can be used, for example, to purchase chargeable products at your expense via our portals or to make settings in your customer center. Please change at least the password listed above. However, we recommend changing all other Telekom passwords as well.
How many accounts were compromised and what is the level of the breach, I am not sure, it will probably be more clear in next coming days. Given the strict law of German Data Protection Authority, this may end up in a serious GDPR fine as well.
