Detroit Style Gallery Owner Credits Mom for Motivation to Create

After years of admiring her mother’s unique clothing creations she wore weekly to church, Jacqueline Johnson started sewing her own clothing at the tender age of 14. Today she is the owner of the 21-year-old Detroit-based women’s fashion lab and styling boutique entitled, The Style Gallery.?

We sat down with Jacqueline to learn more about her business and the custom items she creates for women nationwide.?

Tell us about your training and preparation for becoming a fashion designer. What inspirations occurred along your journey to get you to this point today? My greatest influencer has been my mom. She taught me to sew and has always had a keen sense of style and fashion forward positioning. Despite my love for creating garments and sewing, I originally went to college for something totally different. But one day I had to surrender to the gift God has given me and I changed my major to fashion design.?

How have you grown your customer base to attract clients nationwide? Word of mouth is truly very powerful. I got my first loyal customers from promotions, in-store trunk shows, home trunk shows, things of that nature.? I took what I learned from the local scene and applied it on a national scale by traveling across the country and attending national trunk shows, art festivals, african art festivals, etc.? I put the literal leg work in.

How would you describe the garments you typically create? Are you more of the formal wear solution for women or a combination of shabby chic casual wear??I see the garments I currently create as shabby chic because that’s where I started, but I’m not limited to just that.? I pride myself on versatility.? My garments are an experience.? Wearable art.? I take on clients from many different styles and fashions and accommodate my art to suit their needs.? No pun intended.??

What’s next for The Style Gallery? I am excited to work more with the next generation of fashion creators who bring a much needed energy to the gallery.? We’re also hiring a social media and marketing team to expand our digital presence.? We’ll also be partnering with brand ambassadors to aid the effort.? The goal is to have the same offerings online as we do in the store, giving our customers more ways to have their needs met by The Style Gallery.
