Detroit Data!
Ain't No Data Like Detroit Data - Rock City!
I lived in Chicago for many years and spent 4 years in Singapore. I have traveled around the world for business over the past 20 years, but I was born in and am back living in my hometown of Detroit. The resurgence of Detroit over the past 10 years has been unbelievable. It is now being listed as a top city to visit, live, and to start a business in. Numerous national newspapers, magazines, and TV shows have documented the trials, travesties, and the come-back.
Detroit now has another claim to fame: It is the only city in the US that has all 4 major sports franchises home stadiums in the city’s center and all within a mile of each other. Along with new office buildings, restaurants, apartments, condos, and public transportation, it is creating a very exciting district in the heart of Detroit.
At Skyhook, we are doing some amazing foot traffic analysis about how people move and interact based on the location transmissions we get from mobile phones.
We decided to analyze the foot traffic in Detroit and chose the week of September 10th - it was a great week for the city. Little Caesars Arena (LCA), the new home for the Red Wings and Pistons, opened up with a hometown favorite, Kid Rock. The Detroit Lions hosted the Arizona Cardinals (W 35-23), and the Detroit Tigers hosted the Chicago White Sox. To quote our late mayor Coleman Young, "The City Is Alive", and it was, he would have loved it! Too bad the Amazon executives were not in town that week, there were lots of talented people running around the city!
This video reflects a week's worth of location data in 24-hour loops. You can see the city fill up with people in the morning, the stadiums fill up, and the city goes quite late at night.
The above chart shows the data we found from all these blue dots! At Skyhook, we analyze all of the location data we see from mobile devices. From this, we can see which states people have traveled from to see an event (Homing). We can also figure out brand preferences. Does someone prefer Wal-Mart or Target? Kroger or Whole Foods? And in Detroit's case, which is their favorite Detroit-based casino?
Homing - While there was a heavy attendance of people from Michigan, a noticeable amount of people came from Texas, Florida, and California. The largest amount of people traveled out of state to attend the Lions game.
Personas are derived from where these mobile devices like to hang out before and after they left one of the three stadiums. If they frequent fast food restaurants, we classify them as a "QSR Diner".
Favorite Brands are derived from what actual venues or stores these mobile devices like to go to before and after they left one of the three stadiums.
If you would like to see all the data behind this and a full report on that week, including the casinos, please reach out.
Also, check out blogs from Skyhook. We have done some great work on the Women's March, the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills, and Black Friday Foot Traffic.
Go Detroit
Wow! No wonder the restaurants always seem busy now!

7 年Super interesting blog, especially to see the boxes on the map outlining hot spots -- filling up and emptying with events. One point I'd be curious to know more about, regarding the Homing data gathered. Is that saying someone literally traveled from those other areas into Detroit, enjoyed their time in Detroit, and subsequently went back home -- or -- could they be people who live in Detroit but maintain a cell phone registered to somewhere in california, etc?
